I grabbed my Fender Telecaster electric guitar, as well as my Fender Malibu acoustic and headed out the door. I loaded my trusted instruments in to my friend Marley's car, and we drove towards the Exford Hotel on Russell street in the city, where I'd be performing tonight, just like most Friday nights. I still hadn't quite worked out my set list for the tonight's gig; and I still hadn't finished the song I'd been working on; thanks to Cailin constantly interrupting me, as well as the thoughts about what my mother had told me about Ashton possibly attending.
If he did, I hoped that he wouldn't recognise me when I was performing, although I hadn't changed much over the years. Although, my hair was different; I had it dyed a medium shade of brown, with blonde at the ends. The last time he saw me, it was my natural colour. I'd also gone and gotten quite a few tattoos. My style had also changed since we knew each other. The drive didn't take too long and before I knew it, she dropped me off that the venue, and then drove off, on her way to work. I grabbed my guitars and walked in to the pub I'd be performing at. My set started at seven, and it was only five forty five. I went to check in with the organiser, put my instruments down, and headed toward the bar. I ordered myself a glass of white wine, and looked at my note pad, trying to finalise my set list.
So far I'd gotten four songs sorted, I needed three more. The songs I'd chosen so far were1. Wildest Dreams (cover)
2. Superhero (original)
3. Oath (original)
4. 18 ( 1D cover)I was so annoyed with Cailin, that I couldn't finish my new song. It was completely different to my previously written songs. It was dark, emotional and moving. I settled on adding, Want You Back and Bind Your Love to the list. Only needing one more cover. I took a sip of my wine, and wrote down the song title. Completely surprising myself, at what I had written. Beside You. I looked at the time on my phone, realising I had only five minutes to submit my set list. Meaning I couldn't change the last song. I just sat there, finishing my drink, hoping for two things, one; that Ashton wouldn't show up, especially after adding that song to the list and two; that Cailin wouldn't either. Because then she'd know that I was lying about not knowing how to play one of their songs.
Before I knew it, it was time for me to take the stage, "hey guys, for all of you whose first time here, I'm Lexa," I said taking the stage. I introduced myself as with my stage name rather than my full name, "and welcome back to all the regulars," I began my set. As usual when playing covers, the audience sang along, and if they knew my originals, they'd sing those as well.
I got up to my fourth song of the set, 18. I was covering the One Direction song for the first time, "I got a heart, and I got a song, believe me I would use them both..." I began, and I strummed along on my acoustic guitar, "... I have loved you since we were eighteen, long before we both felt the same thing, to be loved and to be in love, all I can do, is say that these arms were made for holding you..." I looked up and in walked the one person I was hoping not to see. Him. I froze on stage. This was something that never happened. I played by my own rules, and him walking in here, had stuffed up my game. I quickly composed myself and continued, "... I wanna love like you made me feel, when we were eighteen, I wanna love like you made me feel when we were eighteen,"
It was now time for my final cover of the night. The last song of my set. I instantly regretted choosing to play this song last, and even putting it on my set list. But it was too late, I had to play it, "okay guys, this is my last song for the night!" I said into the microphone, "thank you all so much for coming, this ones a cover of a now rather well known band, hope you like it," I started to play again on my acoustic, "with in a minute I was all packed up, I got a ticket to another world, I don't wanna go, I don't wanna go," I took a breathe, "silent words are hard to speak, when your thoughts are all I see, don't ever leave, she said to me," I continued the song, and I was struggling to hold back the tears. Why did he have to come? Why did he have to be here? There was no way now that he wouldn't recognise me, I could hear my voice cracking as I sang, "she lies awake, beside you, I wish I was, I wish I was, she sleeps alone, my heart wants to come home, I wish I was, I wish I was," I finished the song. I put my guitar on the stand, and ran to the bathroom. I knew I only had a few minutes before I had to go back out and pack up my instruments, so the next person could perform. I ran the cold tap and grabbed some paper towel from the dispenser. I stayed in there for as long as I possibly could.
