Chapter Ten.
UnLeashed
......................
As we walked the forest flourished around us.
Trees, taller than a three story house towered over us and reached for the sky.
Squirrels raced, twisting and turning up the trunks and flying through the sky to land on another tree's surface.
The trees slightly swayed in the warm breeze.
Mice, and rabbits run to find shade from this summers unforgiving heat.
It felt good to be outside to feel the wind brush gently across my face.
"Hey look a Fox!" Chloe squealed following a red bushy tail off the trail and into the bushes.
'Beware of the Kitsune.' I heard my grandfathers voice in my head.
"They are cunning, and sly, Deceitful, and tricky. Never trust a Fox. They will put a smile on their face as lead you to your death.'
"Chloe. No!" I shouted after her but she was already gone.
I took off after her rambling through the bushes past trees and through thorns.
I could smell her. Her bodywash and shampoo. Mango and watermelon.
I could smell her?
'Wow.' I thought my sences were becoming stonger by the day.
I could see her path. Her sent left a trail of orange and pink swirling colors where she had walked.
The colors swirled and danced in front of me, tangling and swirling, intertwined like a string of fog or smoke.
"Wow." I breathed. But I continued forward, pushing a tree branch out of my way following the colorful fruit smelling smoke.
A small patch of smoke danced on a tree trunk in the shape of a handprint. Chloe must have touched this tree and her scent had lingered.
I heard with my enhanced hearing leaves rustling under small paws, a tree branch snap and Chloe's piercing scream directly infront of me a few feet away.
I raced through the trees, not watching my surroundings only following the smoke trail of her scent and bursting through the last bit of brush separating me from Chloe.
"Chloe!" I shouted
I am terrified for her life. What if that was a Kitsune? That small red fox. It looked innocent enough, but they all do. If she was hurt I don't know what I would do.
No I do. I would hunt down that incompetent canine and dismember it limb from limb.
I growled at that thought.
'Wow. I'm really losing it now' I chuckled to myself.
The bushes infront of me rustled and parted revealing a long narrow face covered in short red fur, with two very human brown eyes.
"Kitsune." I whispered
The fox nodded its head before disappearing.
Suddenly a soft scratchy voice appeared I'm my head.
'Sometimes things are not what they seem.
You must see in things, the things unseen.'
And it was gone. As fast as the voice appeared it vanished, but it left with a quiet mysterious laugh.
"Wha?" I whispered confused. I knew the voice had come from the fox but how. Foxes can't talk, but it didn't. I didn't hear it with my ears, I heard it with my mind.
