Beneath it all

2 Days Later

My long blond hair blew in my face as I crouched down low to the tree branch I was sitting on.

It was a dark night, and everything was quiet.

This night no birds sang, no crickets chirped.

Dark clouds slowly drifted over the full moon blocking out its light and covering the stars drowning everything, every rock and every tree in shadows.

It was eerily silent. Like it is before a big storm.

A flash of lightning lit the sky and I clung tightly to the tree.

I heard the howling of wolves in the distance.

Chi had been right he did bring reinforcements. There was more than one wolf headed towards the camp.

I shivered not from cold, it was the middle of summer and in Florida, but from fear and anticipation.

'Kiri.' I called out to her. 'Is everyone in position?'

'Affirmative' she responded bravely even though I know on the inside she was panicking. She knew how to keep a calm front tho keep the others relaxed.

We were all located in the trees surrounding the camp.

Kiri had taught all of us shifters how to climb the tree, shift and attack from above.

The others were armed with knives, and Molotov Cocktails and Nadia had her compound Bow and a pack of razor sharp hunting arrows.

They were only to use them for self defense. We didn't want them in the fight as they were vulnerable and practically defenseless against a pack of wolves.

We were hoping that we wouldn't have to fight, but we knew the chances of that were slim.

Another flash of lighting lit up the path below me.

The bushes rustled quietly, and a twig snapped.

'Kiri.' I called to her in my mind 'The first wave is here and I'm ready for combat.'

I wore a short black dress Kiri had lent me. It was small and covered me but had a zipper down the front.

Quickly I unzipped the dress, stepped out of it and hung it on a small branch above my head.

I heard a small crack of a twig below me, and I braced myself against the branch.

I was completely naked, but it was dark so it was ok, no one would see anything.

I felt my body shake and I balanced myself as I shifted.

Lighting flashed.

Two red eyes glared through the bushes below me.

'Luca' I snarled to myself as the pure black wolf prowled through the small path below me.

I sunk low to the branch my long claws scraping the bark.

His ears twitched and I leaped soundlessly to a higher branch, trying not to reveal my yellowish fur to his prying eyes, as he looked up.

Seeing nothing he continued on his way into camp.

'L is Here.' I whispered to Kiri and Chi.

I waited as three more wolves broke through the path after him.
