Chapter Thirteen
Untamed
.................................
Growling to myself I staggered through the trees, tying to make it back to camp. I was heading in the right direction I knew that much, I have a vert good sence of direction, but how far have I gone and what if I had passed camp already?
I guess it is safe to assume, I'm lost.
I stumbled into a clearing I didn't remember ever seeing.
'Grr' I growled inwardly to myself.
'This isn't right. Don't canines always know where they are going? This thing should be able to help me sometime.' I collapsed against a tree in frustration my back scraping the bark.
I huffed blowing out a huge mouthful of air.
Better try something now before it starts getting dark and some wild animal decides to make me their dinner.
I sunk lower down against the tree till I was sitting on the dry, dusty ground. I closed my eyes tightly and tried to focus on what my grandfather had said to do when I wanted to 'change'.
'Let your mind go blank.
Think that you have paws.
Forget about everything else.
Let your paws strech.
Feel the ground churning beneath you paws.
Savor that feeling.
Feel your tail move.
Listen as it pounds the ground.
Feel the wind it makes with every movement.
Savor it.
Feel your muscle rippling under your fur.
Fell the power surge within you.
Savor it.
.. Now let it out.'
I blew out more air and my eyes shot opened. I could see differently, more clearly. I wasn't a wolf entirely but it was close enough, for now.
I heard a soft noise in the tree above me and looked up. It was a squirrel, but it was the sound of bark scraping under its paws that I heard. I looked around and all the leaves of the trees were changing colors in the light. Each leaf was made up of at least three different colors. Dark blues, greens, hints of yellow, shades of purple and occasionally a touch of black. The leaves shined in the sun and reflected the sunlight on the ground. The sun its self looked as if I held a kaleidoscope to it. Swirling colors of sun rays twisted in the sky.
I dusted myself off and began to walk back to camp. I could see a soft colorful fog seeping through the trees and moving with the wind. I followed it.
It would lead me to camp. The fog, a colorful mixture of all my friends scents, being blown by the wind. I could smell and see all but Aria's scent.
I could hear their voices as I walked closer and closer to camp. I was just about to step into the clearing when the bushes beside me rustled. I stepped back suddenly startled.
I saw the orange-pink fog, and smelled her watermelon-mango scent, it was Chloe.
I was about to show myself when she stepped through the bushes infront of me, but she was Oboviously waiting for someone, probably Jonathan, and she had no limp. Her ankle was completely healed.
My animal instincts kicked in, that or my curiosity got the better of me. I crouched low to the ground, hiding behind a thick bush and waited.
I didn't have to wait long. A few seconds later I watched Aria walk out from behind a tree. No smoke came off of her. I couldn't detect any scent from her.
"Aria." Chloe began
Aria just stared her down. Chloe gulped, looking nervously around at her feet.
"What was the deal with the Kitsune?" She barked in a shallow whisper. She looked over her shoulder as though someone might be listening.
'Kitsune.' I thought 'how would they-'
But then I remembered what she had said.
'Things are not what they appear.'
Aria was a wolf.
"I'm sorry I wanted to corner her and make her tell us what she knows." Chloe whispered
'And so was Chloe'
" That is the stupidest idea I have ever heard." Aria hissed "you can never corner a Kitsune. They can never be caught, or trapped. They are sneaky like that." She kicked a tree.
Chloe shied away from Aria. Realization hit me.
Chloe was low ranking and Aria was of higher rank, usually the two don't mix but for some reason they are.
Not needing to hear anymore I crawled out from under the bush careful not to be seen and made my way into the camp.
