I opened my eyes to see nothing but white. White walls all round me, white a white floor, a white ceiling and I say upon a white bed. I touched my face to see if I was dead, the last thing I remember was being pushed off the cliff by Theresa.
But I'm alive? "Hello" I called out, but my voice broke so the sound didn't right. I cleared my throat. "Hello!" I called louder and waited. Moments later, part of the wall opened, revealing a door.
"Hello Annabelle I'm Janson." The man said. He too wore white and has a face that resembles one of a rat.
"Hi" I said, not knowing what else to say.
"By now you must be very confused. Allow me to clear some things up for you. First off, you are very much alive. When you fell you broke several bones in your back, but thanks to new technology you were put to sleep for the recovery process, so you are able to walk and run and live as if you'd never been hurt." He said and I nodded, still confused
"Where are my friends" I asked
"You didn't let me finish. Next you should know that the maze was an experiment conducted by WCKD. You are currently at WCKD headquarters, and we are an organization working to find a cure to a brain disease that is currently killing a large percentage of the world at a very rapid pace. This disease is known as the Flare. Throughout the maze you and your friends were faced with tasks and obstacles while your brain activity was being monitored. This being said, that means that some of the people out into the maze are immune to the disease and others are not. We are working to see what makes you immune, so that we can in the future stop the disease." He said and looked at me.
"Where are my friends" I asked again, understanding what he was saying, though it's all hard to grasp. I just need to know if they are okay.
"Your friends are in phase 2 of the experiment, which is called the scorch. Most of them I warn you are dead, but your friends Thomas, Minho and newt are safe" he said and I let out a breath.
"Why didn't you just let me die" I asked
"Well you see Annabelle, you are a very important part of this experiment. The boys lost you, and soon you will all be reunited. This great loss followed by so much happiness will trigger different parts of the brain, parts that monsters and a maze cannot trigger." He said.
"When do I get to see them? And am I immune to the flare?" I asked
"You will see them soon. They have almost completed the scorch trials. And yes, you are one of the lucky ones who are immune." He said
"Who isn't immune?" I asked
"Well, since you won't see anyone before they find out, you should know that Thomas and Minho are like you, they are also immune to the disease. Newt, however is not." He said and my stomach dropped. I feel tears coming on. "Get rest. Have patience" the man with the rat face told me and left me alone to cry.
Why newt of all people?
