It's been a year, a year since Jamie was told he didn't have cancer anymore. He was free of the surgeries, free of the small stuffy hospital room, birthdays and christmases spent copped up.
He got to start living his life as a normal kid, a kid who could go outside and could run and play with his younger siblings. He didn't have to constantly be sick or worry about his illness, he could relax now.
After being told he was cancer free they had to spend a week in the hospital just to make sure his body was coping okay, he was fine, smiling from ear to ear every day when he knew he would be leaving the hospital. He still has to go for checkups every now and then just to make sure he was not getting the cancer back.
His visits much happier now, the doctors smiling when they saw the family, knowing how much they've all been through.
The twins had started walking, mateo being wobbly on his, needing help from both parents when he started to walk the floor, Georgia on the other hand, a confident walker, brave as she took one step after another and rushed her way across the floor.
Lexi was as cheeky as ever, really getting into her running, at only 5 years old she was a confident and fast runner, taking after her mother.
Jamie was back at school and loving life, not taking any day for granted after going through what he did.
"Mama" the baby gestured his hands towards the brunette as he made grabbing motions for her to pick him up, baby Mateo being the needier twin out of him and Georgia.
"Hi bambino" she cooed at him, grabbing his chubby form from his crib, it was late at night, and it was just Carina, as Maya was working a night shift at the station. Being able to focus on her work more now, as Jamie was better.
She held Mateo in her arms as she sat down on the chair tucked in the corner of the twins bedroom. She heard for footsteps make their way towards her, looking up to see her daughter, messy hair, as she held her stuffed toy.
"Hi darling, why are you up?" She asked, as she cradle led her son and soothed him to sleep. She shrugged her shoulders as she lifted herself up so she was sat on Carinas lap. "Scared" she whispered, not wanting to wake her brother. "Of what my darling?" Carina had been up with their daughter a lot recently, her nightmares being more constant than usual, she wasn't sure why.
"Not sure" she shrugged again, leaning back so she was resting her body against the brunettes. Carina tapped her daughters back in an attempt for her to stand up, she walked over to the crop and gently and quietly placed a sleeping Mateo down on the mattress.
"Come on" she extended her hand out for the smaller blonde, the little girl took hold of her mother's hand as they walked back to Lexies bedroom.
Carina woke up to a sleeping Maya, rubbing at her eyes as she tried to rid of the exhaustion. It took her a while to get Lexi back to sleep, her daughter being scared of the dark.
"Maya" she didn't want to wake the blonde but knew she'd want her to as today was an important and special day. It was Jamie's birthday.
"Bambina" she shook her wife gently knowing she'd been working hard all night. "Hm?" She rolled over to face the brunette and slowly opened her eyes.
Smiling when she saw her wife smiling down at her. "Goodmorning" her voice was deep and cracking, her rough morning voice always making Carina feel a certain type of way. "Come on" she sat up and got out of bed, her feet touching the cold hardwood floor. "Coming" Maya followed behind her, standing in front of the mirror as her wife wrapped her arms around her small toned frame. The brunette eyeing the blondes reflection, messy hair, her skin warm from the comfort of their bed.
Maya squeezed Carinas waist, placing a kiss to her wife's neck. "Mommy" they heard Lexies frantic footsteps make an appearance into their bedroom, clearly excited for her older brothers birthday. "Mama!" She ran to the women, jumping at them as she wrapped her small arms around them.
"Jamie's birthday" she looked up and grinned a toothless grin, smiling from ear to ear. It was so endearing how close Lexi and Jamie were, their bond really shining through during his cancer diagnosis. "Ok ok we're coming" Lexi grabbed Mayas hand and dragged her out of the room, Carina following behind her wife.
The morning had gone by, and it was now Jamie's party, he had friends from school over plus family and everyone from the station, they were his family. "Happy birthday to you" happy birthday dear Jamie, happy birthday to you" everyone cheered as the boy blew out the candles, his eyes reflecting in the light, and his smile wide, this was his first birthday after the cancer, Maya stood holding the cake, her eyes welling up at the memories of a year ago today.
They had no idea what was to come.
Carina holding her phone as she stood next to Maya, looking around her, at all the people that got her and her wife through such difficult times, her brother and everyone from the station, being the best family she could ask for.
Bambino, smile" Jamie took the cake from his mother and held it up to his face, being careful not to drop it, he smiled and Carina took the photo, her eyes wide and her smile wider.
She was so incredibly proud of her little boy, of the battles he'd faced at such a young age. The family her and her wife had created, and the memories they had to come.
