Chapter 46: The journey begins

Jamie was currently at the hospital, missing a day off school for his appointment meaning both women could be there this time. "Ok we are just going to talk about the first steps of recovery, future surgeries he will need and chemo therapy" the woman told them. "He will be having less days at school as he gets sicker he might have to spend most of his days at school, but for now I will send home all the things he needs medicine, so on and so forth" she added receiving a nod from both women. "How many months until he starts to loose his hair?" Maya asked dreading that part, "it could take up to 3 months or it could be sooner, chunks will fall out slowly" she replied "I'm sure your wife could help you... did you say you were a doctor?" She asked
"Sì I work here actually" she replied. "Ahhh I see, so you'll get to see your mommy while she's at work Jamie" she said smiling at the boy that looked a little nervous, "he's shy with new people" Maya explained pulling Jamie closer to her so he could snuggle into her side, "that's ok" she nodded smiling softly at the blonde. "So for the whole eating situation, he won't want to eat, he will loose a lot of weight... it won't look normal so be prepared, he'll be very fragile so he needs to take it easy" she explained making sure they knew everything they needed to. "I'll give you some leaflets but everything else you just take as it comes" she added receiving a nod from both women. "Is there anything else you want to ask me?" She asked wondering if their were any other queries they had about the situation, instead Jamie raised his hand "yes sweetheart" she said softly "will I die?" He asked, Maya could hear her heart break... she didn't know if he could or would die, she just wanted him to get through this, Carina had to look away for a moment trying not to cry at the words that left his mouth. "No you won't die, you will get very ill but you won't die you look very brave" the doctor reassured not knowing how to answer a question that no one new the answer too. He nodded and stood up to hug the woman, the brunette wrapped her arms around the boy, Jamie had always been like this, giving shows of affection to people he cared for or that were nice to him. "That was nice thank you" the doctor said pulling away from the hug watching as Jamie returned to his seat next to the blonde, "we'll be seeing a lot of each other so here's my work number if you need me" she said as she handed the brunette a card with her details, "that's my pager number if you need me page" she added as she handed the brunette a post it note with numbers scribbled on it, "thank you doctor...?" She asked not knowing what the woman's name was, "Richardson" she answered, "thank you dr Richardson" Maya said as she and the brunette got up to leave with Jamie following next to them, "bye dr Richie" Jamie said waving at the woman before leaving receiving a smile from the brunette and a wave "bye Jamie"

"So he needs to take this when we eat?" The blonde asked as she lifted the bag of nuts up in her hand, "surly that won't fill him up" she said "Bella he doesn't have the same digestive system as us right now he is full all the time" she replied earning a sigh from the blonde "this is going to be hard" she said walking over to her wife wrapping her arms around the brunette and resting her chin on her shoulder. "We can do it... he'll get through it" she said stroking her arm up and down the soft skin under Maya's shirt. "Momma!" They were interrupted by Lexie's voice, "yes Bella!" She called back "how long until dinner I'm hungry" she said as she made her way into the kitchen rubbing her stomach, "not long sweetheart about 15 minutes" the blonde replied, "should we tell her?" Carina whispered "tell me what?" The young girl asked wondering what they were talking about. "Come here Bella" Carina said sitting on one of the stools pulling the blonde up to rest on her lap, "ok so your brother has come down with an illness that will make him very poorly" she started receiving a nod from the blonde, "you need to be nice to your brother" she added "ok momma I can do that" she said receiving a smile from the brunette, "good girl Bella" she relied moving a strand of hair out of her face, "dinner my love" Maya said placing at kiss to the blondes forehead before lifting her from Carina's lap and into her highchair.

"Ok this is your meal Jamie" Maya said placing the bag of nuts in front of the boy watching as his face dropped, "I know sweetheart but you won't eat that" she said feeling bad for her son, "I know but it just smells good" he replied placing his hand into the zip lock bag grabbing a handful of nuts.

After dinner Jamie was snuggled up on the sofa with a glass of milk next to him on the coffee table, they were told it was a good thing to drink to make him feel more active and a good source of calcium. "Hey bubba" Maya whispered not knowing if he was asleep or not, "mmmm" she heard him reply, lifting his head up in search for his mother, "it's alright sweetheart lay back down and get nice and comfy if you fall asleep I'll take you to bed, have you brushed your teeth?" She asked knowing dental hygiene was an important thing, he nodded his head in agreement and laid his head back down, Maya made her way over to the couch and leaned down to place a soft kiss to his sweaty forehead, "you're burning up bubba do you want some medicine?" She asked "mhm" he nodded moving the cover off of him due to it being too hot. When Maya got back Jamie was sat up his eyes closing and opening not allowing himself to sleep, "here take these" she said as she handed the boy the medicine and watched him swallow the liquid. "Alright comfy?" She asked "mhm" he nodded snuggling into a pillow his eyes immediately closing, "goodnight handsome" she said giving another soft kiss to his head before he drifted off to sleep.
