Chapter 53: The wait

Flash back:

Christmas 2017 (their first Christmas *just Jamie*)

"Jamie Hunny open this one" Maya told him as she grabbed the big box from under the Christmas tree and placed it in front of him. "Wooooah" the little boy exclaimed as he started to tear the wrapping paper eagerly wanting to find out what the present was.

Carina was stood behind Maya with her phone taking photos smiling as she watched Jamie attempt to open the box. "Mommy help" he said giving up and desperately wanting to see what was inside the box. Maya grabbed the knife Carina handed her and used it to cut the sellotape using her hands to rip the rest of it off and open the box.

She watched as Jamie peered his head in the box to see what it was "MICKY" he squealed grabbing the large teddy by the head pulling at it but struggling due to the size of it, "here" maya giggled leaning forward slightly so she could grab the teddy and pull it out of the box.

She watched as he wrapped his arms around the teddy nuzzling his head into the soft toy, "thanks momma, thank you mommy" he said walking over to the blonde placing a kiss to her cheek and then walking over to the brunette to do the same, she leaned down and pointed to her lips making the little boy giggle as the older woman puckered her lips waiting for a kiss, "you silly momma" he said before leaning in to kiss the brunette.

"Jamie bud there's more look at his bottom" Maya told him as she watched his eyebrows furrow in search for what she had said. "That's it" she exclaimed as he found the piece of paper stuck to the bottom of the toy, both women watched as he started to peal the envelope off of the toy ripping the brown paper eagerly to see what was inside.

When he finally got into it he placed the teddy down to see what the piece of card said, a golden ticket covered in drawings and a few words on the front which said 'Disney world' of course Jamie was still little, so struggled to read it "momma help" he whined wanting to know what it said and getting frustrated "Sì come over here bambino" she instructed.
"Ok Dis..." she started waiting for Jamie to repeat her words "Dis" he repeated "ney" she added "ney" he repeated again "world" she said waiting for a reply turning around to see if he was still there, "DISNEY WORLD" he screamed bouncing up and down in excitement "mommy! We're going to Disney" he said running over to the blonde who had been recording the whole thing. "We are!" She giggled as she stood up to lift her son in the air above her head and then placing him on her shoulders, the woman started running around the apartment hearing as giggles erupted from the little boys mouth. Carina stood in awe of her little family, "best Christmas ever!"

(Present day) Both POV:

Maya and Carina where waiting in the waiting room of the kids unit of the hospital, it had been about 5 hours the sky had turned grey signalling that night time was on its way. "Andrea you're sure you can babysit them?" Carina asked just double checking with her brother "Sì you know what number to call if you need me" he said before grabbing a sleeping Lexie and holding her in his arms, with the pushchair with the sleeping twins in the other hand. "Thank you" she whispered as she watched her brother get on the elevator waving before the doors shut.

After 3 more hours the doors opened, a surgeon made his way over to both women making them both stand. Maya grabbed her wife's hand in her own running her thumb over the soft skin. "He's stable" the male surgeon told them, making both women let out a breath they didn't even know they were holding. "There's a but" Carina said already knowing how this went, she had told numerous amounts of people if their children where alive or not, she knew how this worked. "Yes there's a but..." he began before walking down the corridor to Jamie's room both women following behind him, "whilst we where in search for the first lot of cancer we needed to remove, we came into contact with a whole other lot of it" he explained watching as Maya's head fell "so it's spread" she said trying to understand the man. "Yes it's spread... progressively he's going to get sicker" Carina wanted to say something but she couldn't, her throat went dry so Maya asked the question they both needed the answer to "will he die?" She asked watching as the mans face went a little pale obviously feeling uncomfortable "he has a 60% chance of survival" he told them. Carina's body gave in her eyes filled with tears and she let her body go down to the ground slowly slipping down the nearest wall "I'll give you guys a minute" the man said before walking away.

"Hey hey hey... shhhhh baby it's alright" the blonde hushed sitting down next to her wife running her hands up and down the brunettes spine, softly pushing her head so it was resting on her chest, running her hands through the soft curls massaging her scalp.

"I can't loose him" she said her body starting to calm down a little from Maya's ministrations to her head,
"me too, but we have to be strong for him" she whispered into her ear before giving it a soft kiss,
"Sì I know" she nodded leaning her head up so she was eye level with the blonde, "I love you" she whispered looking down at her wife's lips leaning in to kiss the blonde softly, running her tongue a long her bottom lip asking for access to her mouth, knowing that's what they both needed just a little relief to ease the pain. Maya allowed her the access and slowly opened her mouth letting Carina slip her tongue inside, they had kissed a lot during their relationship but they had never shared a kiss so meaningful before, no one fought for dominance, they just sat there tangled up in each other enjoying the feeling of each other before Maya leaned away a little breathless "I've got you... I'm right here"
