[ ENCHANTED FOREST ]
[ PAST ]
The sky was dark and the moon had been covered by clouds that looked more grey than they did white. There was a cold breeze blowing through the forest, despite it still being warm outside. It had been exactly twenty-nine days since Alice saw her husband and her children. She had no idea why Brennan had taken them, just that he had. And she only knew that because Liam had scribbled a note in his messy, child-like handwriting stating Father is taking us all for a fun adventure. We will be back soon.
Soon.
That word almost made Alice laugh and not humorously. She wasn't upset with Liam for writing the word, she was upset and angry with Brennan for telling the children he would bring them home soon. She was also mad at herself because she trusted her husband. She was mad at herself for not guessing something was going on when he suddenly started spending time with Lily; which was something he never did. Not since she started to show magical abilities and was prophesied to wield powerful dark magic.
Brennan had spent most of Lily's life avoiding her, and sometimes he would simply pretend that she didn't exist. Lily was barely eight years old. All she wanted was her father's love. She would've been so excited that he started to spend time with her. She would've been so happy that her father had finally hugged her again. She would've joined the adventure without hesitation because her father wanted to spend time with her. She would've had zero idea how much this little adventure would change her life. Nobody did. There was no way to tell just how drastically everyone's lives would change.
Alice found herself thinking about that a lot. She could only pray to a God she wasn't sure even existed anymore in hopes that her children were safe. If Brennan were to abandon them as she feared he would, she could only hope that her children would stick together and care for one another as she had raised them to do.
She held Lily's doll in her hand and absentmindedly rubbed her thumb over the rough texture as she stared out of the window. The doll was something special to Lily and to Alice as well. The pair had spent a whole day gathering the right materials and then a further two days crafting the doll until Lily declared it to be perfect. That was almost six years ago now. Lily was only four years old. So young, yet so lonely at the same time. Alice made sure to do whatever she could to ensure Lily smiled and felt love. Liam and Killian followed suit too.
Her heart ached every time she thought about them. Every time she looked at the majority of their belongings that had been left behind; their clothes, their toys, the wooden swords that Liam and Killian used to fight with outside, the sketches Lily made on scrap bits of parchment paper. It all hurt. It all brought her to tears.
