Chapter Six- Can’t Sleep

James was sitting in the Gryffindor common room well after twelve in the morning. He could not sleep, and that was a big problem since James always slept like a log. Memories from earlier this morning had haunted his slumber, making him even more aggravated than before. James unconsciously rubbed the sore parts of his body.

Who knew such a scrawny person like Snape, could kick so hard? He looked over his bruised knuckles and sighed. His anger got the best of him, again. He has not lost control like that ever since… Ever since...then. He thought about Lily Evans, for about the fifth time that day. He most likely scared the wits out of her. Great going James, now she'll never look at you with out freaking out, James thought miserably. Much less, go out with him. Life was so cruel sometimes. The one girl he fancies is probably terrified of him now. He needed to take his mind off Evans for a while. He put his invisibility cloak over his pajamas, boxer shorts and an undershirt, and snuck out of the portrait. Which was no easy task, the Fat Lady in the portrait was a light sleeper. After struggling with a query paiting, James walked around Hogwarts heading to the one place he could think clearly, the kitchen. As he made his way towards the kitchen, he remembered the first time his father gave him the silvery, illusive cloak.

                                                                                                                                                                                    ***

It was precisely two years ago on August 30 when his father said to him, “James, you are, going to Hogwarts now it’s time I gave you something important.” James’s dad showed him the box that he had been holding behind his back.

“What’s that dad?” Squeaky, eleven-year-old James asked.

James’s dad motioned for him to sit on the couch next to him.

As James sat down his father spoke. “James as you knows that we come from a pure blood family right?”

James said, annoyed as boring and really simple past lecutres plagued his mind, “Yes dad, I understand that means were not related to Muggles in anyway but we should still respect them because they are people as well.”

James’s father nodded and said, “Yes but that’s not what I meant. Our blood lineage is important, very important. James you know the Tale of the Three Brothers correct?”

James replied, “Well yeah, every wizard and witch knows that. Three brothers want to cross some river; they pulled out their wands and gave them wave creating a bridge. Death was angry because he had been cheated out of his new victims. He pretended to congratulate them on being smart and gave them each gifts. The eldest one Antioch, wanted a wand that can be undefeated. The second brother, Cadmus, wanted to mock Death more and asked for a stone that brought back people from the dead. And the last brother, Ignotus the one with brains, did not trust Death and wanted an invisibility cloak to never be found by Death unless he wanted to. Antioch died for power and Cadmus died for a lost love, without producing an heir, but Ignotus passed the cloak on and died greeting Death as an old friend. Mum told me that story all the time. What does the story have to do with our lineage?”
