Chapter Thirty-Three: They Deserve It Because They're Worth It

Lily was petrified.

The day before Lily and the others had to go back to Hogwarts, Mrs. Potter asked for a talk. Sure, she was kind woman. But she was a mother, James' mother. A mother always looked out for her child no matter what cost. If that meant weeding out girls who were nice but not what she deemed good enough for her son, Lily was sure Mrs. Potter would do it. She was glad she was sitting because if not, she was also sure that her knees would be shaking.

Mrs. Potter smiled. "Relax, dear I'm not going to kill you."

Lily gave a sheepish smile in return. "Sorry."

"You know, I remember how nervous I was to meet my husband's parents to. I was so shaken that I bumped into the cabinet and broke every one their fine china's."

"Ouch," Lily said.

She chuckled, "I promised I would pay for the damage, I felt like it would be cheating if I just waved my wand and fixed it with a Repairo. I wasn't sure if that was what gained their respect or not, but from that moment on I was deemed acceptable by them. I was just glad that they weren't angry at me. Fleamont thought it was hilarious and would tease me terribly for it."

Lily smirked, "Sounds like what James would do."

She raised an eyebrow, "Did James dump his butter-beer on you to get your attention?"

"Ah," Said Mr. Potter walking into the living room. "Telling the old tales of our epic love story?"

She grinned, "Well it was a grand and spectacular one. That beautiful stain was token of our love."

Mr. Potter smirked, "You looked great with that stain, really brought out the color of your eyes."

Lily giggled. "What a charmer."

Mr. Potter grinned and wrapped his arm around his wife. "I see James has followed in my footsteps."

"Oh yes," she said. "The dung bombs in my backpack and the banners that said, 'Go out with me, Evans?' we're really hard to resist."

Mrs. Potter said, "You know he would always come back from Hogwarts with this smile on his face. When I asked about it he just said, 'There's this girl I have my eye on. She'll come around eventually' I'm assuming its you."

Lily nodded, "Yeah, he always had on a smile when I slapped him."

Mrs. Potter grew serious, "Lily, I'm going to be very honest. You are the loveliest young lady I've ever met. You're beautiful, you're smart, and you're funny."

Lily bit her lip. Here it comes.

"But... you are so out of his league. You really could do better." Mrs. Potter said with a smirk.

Mr. Potter chimed, "Yeah, the idiot can't even fold his socks properly."

Lily was laughing now.

Mrs. Potter smiled, "He is happy, Lily. So very happy. Why I haven't seen him this happy since before Harry died. It was tough time for everyone but no one took it harder than him. He blamed himself for what happened, we all did, dear. He used to walk with this...weight I suppose. Like all of the hardships he faced had piled onto his shoulders and he took the burden without complaint. Now, he walks lighter like everything that troubled him before was not gone, but not worth blaming himself for. I'm not saying he's stopped mourning Harry, I don't think any of us will. But I am saying that it's because of you that he's smiling and living the way he should. Thank you, Lily. It's apparent that because he loves you it has changed him for the better. He's a good person, Lily. But I can see that you will make him into a great one."
