Chapter Nine: The Not So Grand Theft Of Literature

"This James," Remus whisper-shouted into his ear. "Is what could possibly go wrong!"

"What have you boys done now?" Professor McGonagall shouted at them. The boys were in McGonagall's office, again. Only, all four of them were together.

Peter was jumping up and down in his seat, and beads of sweat trailing down his forehead in nerves. Remus twiddled his thumbs, refusing to meet the professor's heated gaze that bore down upon them. James' mind was racing with convincing lies.

No, pretending that they all took a midnight sleep walk at the same time hardly seemed plausible. Sirius on the other had was shocked. For there were currently horns growing out of the top of his head and smoke coming out of his ears.

It was not his or James' fault though. Okay, maybe it was. "Well? Should one of you favor to explain why you four were caught in the restricted section of the library, with books about patronus', animagus', and forbidden curses? And why is Mr. Black currently imitating the devil?"

Since none of the others were incapable of speaking. (Peter was too scared to, Remus was throwing daggers at James with his eyes, and if Sirius tried to speak, all that would come out was fire) James decided to speak.

"Well, you see professor, it is a rather funny story."

"Oh, good then." A voice said behind them. A voice that caused Peter to sweat even more, Remus to rub his hands to keep from punching James, Sirius to produce more smoke from his ears, and for James to sit up straighter, as if the tarantula was back crawling up and down his back.

All five of them turned around to see another. "Luckily, I am in the mood for an amusing story." Albus Dumbledore said.

James coughed awkwardly. If he told the truth, (which he would never do) all four of them would most likely be expelled. Despite the fact that James was horrid at some of his studies, he loved Hogwarts. It was his home away from home. There were no tearful looks from his mother. There were no pitied gazes from his father. In addition, there was actual talking.

Ever since, the subject-that-will-never-ever-be-spoken-of-for-the-memory-was-too-painful-and-James-would-beat-you-to-a-pulp, incident. The Potter family had once been cheerful, lively, and most of all not depressed. There was no shred of evidence that the incident had ever happened at Hogwarts. However at his home, it was everywhere. Pictures were taken away, with outlines of the frames etched into the walls. There were four chairs, one that sat alone near the window, unoccupied by anyone.

No! James would not have to back there. He could only just stand to live there every summer. He simply refused to tell them what happened.

"Well," James started. He stopped speaking and furrowed his brows. What would sound convincing?

Professor McGonagall sighed and said, "Mr. Pettigrew, please take Mr. Black to the Hospital wing. I fear that he may burn my office down."

Peter sprung up from his seat at once, way too happy to have an excuse to leave. Peter grabbed Sirius' arm and dragged him out of the room. Sirius walked awkwardly and stumbled on his way out. For, his feet had begun to grow three times his size and become scaly.

Remus' mind was also in deep thought. If James told the truth, his secret would be revealed to McGonagall, they would be expelled. Remus would be a lone wolf, he thought humorlessly. Then again, it was all James' fault. Remus didn't ask for them to try and help him. They took it upon themselves to 'fix' the matter. Look at where it got them. In the office with Headmaster Dumbledore, and the deputy Headmistress. However, James knew they were mates. No matter how stupid they acted sometimes, they were also noble, kind, and genuine. Remus loved them, even if James and the others were completely stupid.
