Wes's POV------
I sat in shock for a few seconds until I realized that I need to be there for Maddie. "Maddie!? Maddie?? Baby can you hear me??? Oh god..." I reached over and felt for a pulse. Luckily I had decided to take one of the EMT classes my sophomore year so I knew what to do. Her pulse was there but weak. I could hear sirens faintly coming towards us. "Stay with me Maddie.. I need you. Don't leave me baby.." I heard the doors of the ambulances and fire trucks open and the orders being called out to the firefighters. I finally realized where we ended up after the crash. I looked out of the front windshield and saw a tree.. We had been hit so hard that the front of my truck by the engine was wrapped around a tree. I started shaking. "Sir? Sir can you hear me?" Yea, yea I can hear you. "Okay I'm going to need you to stay calm. Can you do that for me?" Yea I think so. Maddie.. My girlfriend.. How is she?? "We're working on getting her out now. Can you tell me how old you are?" I'm 19. Maddie's 18." Okay. What's your name sir?" Wes.. "Okay Wes were going to get you outta here just hang tight." Thank you... "There are two paramedics coming your way. You'll be out shortly. And if you don't have any injuries you can ride with your girl to the hospital. The way you're acting and the way you look you should be okay so hang tight."
Minutes later I was taken to the ambulance to be checked out. I looked out the back and saw Maddie being pulled out of the truck. I panicked and jumped out of the ambulance and ran to Maddie's side. "Okay Wes were going to need you to step aside so we can get the stretcher into the ambulance and then you can hop in the back with me." I shook my head and let go of Maddie's hand. I started to tear up a little bit. As soon as the paramedic got in after they got the stretcher in I jumped in and helped close the doors. Then we were on the way to the hospital...
"How many minutes out??" "About 3 minutes!" Stay with me Mads. I can't go on without you. Stay with me... "Heart rate is stable but she's still unconscious and her leg isn't doing her any favors either so step on it, Jones!" When the paramedic told the driver to step on it and called her Jones I jumped. When the paramedic in the back with me saw me jump, she put her hand on my shoulder and told me it was going to be okay. When we got out of the ambulance at the hospital, I grabbed onto Maddie's hand and ran with the gurney until the doctor wouldn't let me go any further. As we were running the paramedic, Jones, was telling the doctors everything she knew. "Maddie, age 17. Her heart rate was stable about half way here. Her leg doesn't look so good and possible head trauma." "Trauma bay 3, get her vitals and an X-ray on that leg stat. Get her prepped to look at that head of hers too to check for head trauma. Go!" I went as far as I could and stood blankly for a minute until the paramedic that was in the back with me came back after filling out paperwork. "Hey, Wes. Come on. Come sit in the waiting room. If you want me to I will stay with you until your parents get here. Or until you find out anything about Maddie." Thank you. I should probably call her parents first. I knew this phone call was going to be hard. I pulled out my phone and dialed her moms phone number.
W: Mrs. Moore? Hi, uh it's Wes.
MM: Hi Wes! How's your day going?Maddie texted me and told me you two were going out for the day.
W: Yea.. About that. Um, we stopped for lunch at the diner right off of Main Street and uh, when we pulled out of the parking lot and onto the intersection... A truck ran a red light and uh.. Ran into the passenger side of my truck. Maddie, uh, she most likely has a broken leg and head trauma.. But uh, they won't let me see her. We just got to the hospital about 10 minutes ago.
I started to break down on the phone and Mrs. Moore was silent.
MM: Oh my god... Okay I'll be there in 15 minutes. Let me know if anything changes. Are you okay?
W: I don't know. I don't care right now. I just want to make sure Maddie is okay.
MM: Wes promise me you will get looked at. Go, before I get there. Get checked out. There's nothing you can do for her right now.
W: Okay. Thank you.
MM: I'll be there in a little bit. Do you want me to call your mom on the way there?
W: please if you can.
MM: Okay. Take care of yourself.
W:Alright bye.
Maddie's mom is demanding I get looked at. She said that there's nothing I can do for Maddie right now so can you...? She cut me off "I'll o find a nurse and we will get you into a trauma bay to get you checked out. Just calm down and take some deep breathes." Thank you.. De came back 2 minutes later and told me to follow her. I got up and followed her to the trauma bay. On the way there I felt a sharp pain in my leg and looked down at it. I was wearing my shorts but still saw the blood running down my leg near my shin. God dammit.... The paramedic turned around and looked at me with worry. "Is everything okay?" My leg. I just realized it. I've been so focused on Maddie I didn't even notice.. "Alright well can you still walk okay? We're almost there. I think I'm good. I took another step and my leg gave out underneath me and I heard a crack. I cursed under my breath. "Alright Wes. Stay with me. I need a gurney over here!!" Thank you. I was fine but my leg gave out and I heard kind of a crack. "By the looks of it it's probably a broken ankle, possibly two different bones. But only a doctor can tell you that so come on." It took three people to lift me onto the gurney. Once I was there they took me to the trauma room and lifted me onto the bed. The doctor came in and started checking my vitals and making sure everything was normal. "Alright. Well, it seems you have a major concussion and your leg is broken in two places. You're probably going to have to be on crutches for at least 6 weeks and a walking boot for 2 at the least." Thank you. Uh, have you heard anything on a Maddie Moore? She was brought in about 40 minutes ago. "Ah yes. Miss Moore is awake and stable. She has broken her right leg and has a major concussion as well. No brain swelling so that's good. If you would like I can get you in a hard cast and get you down to her room?" That would be great. Thank you so much. "No problem." After about 15 more minutes I had my cast on and was in a wheelchair on the way to Maddie's room. When we were going passed the waiting room I saw my mom and Maddie's mom jump from their seats to come next to me. "Oh my god.. Wes are you okay???" Yes mom I'm fine. I've just got a concussion and my left leg is broken in two different spots. I'm going to see Maddie right now. "Thank god.. How's Maddie? They wouldn't tell us anything yet." She's got a major concussion and her right leg is broken. I'll let you know anything more if I find out anything. Okay. What happened? We ah, we went to lunch after the movie at the diner on Main Street by Ashton. We pulled out of the parking lot after lunch into the intersection and a truck ran the red and hit the passenger side. Luckily I knew to check her pulse.. It was weak but still there. That's about when the paramedics got there. Okay. Go see Maddie. We'll talk more about it later if you want to. Okay.. Then the doctor wheeled me to Maddie's room. When I got there I almost jumped out of my wheelchair to run to her side but I couldn't. I got to her side and she pulled me down for a hug. She held onto me for as long as possible. The doctor walked out to give us some time. Oh my God I'm so glad you're okay.. I'm okay.. I'm okay.. Come here.. I hobbled on my good leg to lay down next to her in the hospital bed. I put my arm around her and she put her arm around my waist. Your moms here. She's worried sick. I told her everything I knew but it wasn't much. Your moms here too right? You didn't just call my parents did you? No, my moms here too. I'm just so glad you're okay. Oh god. You know what this means? What? Graduation. We're either going to be hobbling our way onto the stage or wearing an ugly walking boot. I laughed that she could still make jokes. I'm glad she was still the way she used to be. As much as it is going to kill you to have a wear a boot or be on crutches with that amazing dress you picked out, you're probably going to have to. Damn, and I thought that we were going to get to go home and start looking for apartments. I know. I have to start looking for a new truck too. I just hope they put that sorry son ova bitch in jail for hurting my girl. Have you heard anything about him yet? Not yet. I'll talk to the police though. They should be coming in to get our statements later. Just then there was a knock on the door and two policemen walked in. Well that was like perfect timing. "Mr Jones, we understand that you were awake and alert after the crash. Can you tell us anything about the other driver? Did you see his face or even details about the car? Yes. I know he was driving a white Chevy 4x4. I didn't see his face really well. I know he was a white male. Looked maybe about mid 30s? Alright. Thank you. We will be back soon with news for you. Hopefully it'll be good news but I can't make any promises. Thank you.
About an hour later the two policemen came back. Maddie was curled into my side asleep so they tried to be as quiet as possible. "Okay. We got your hitter. His name is Jonah Wright. Does that name sounds familiar at all to you? No. I don't think so. Why? We're just making sure this wasn't on purpose. We did catch him though and he is in custody. Thank you. No problem. I heard from a doctor that you two will probably be released by the end of the night. Do you want me to go get your doctor for you? Yes. Thank you." He sent the doctor in with release forms for us to sign. I gently woke Maddie so she could sign hers. "Okay. I'm going to check your vitals and then you'll be good to go. Okay.
Ten minutes later we were hobbling out to my moms car. We went back to our house for the night to get some rest. We went inside and Maddie curled into my side once again as soon as we made it up to bed. I kissed her forehead and wrapped my arms around her shoulders. Soon after I fell asleep with Maddie clung to my side.
