Chapter 8:

Emerald

I stood in my room in front of the mirror, turning this way and that admiring the coral-colored dress I had on.

"Do you think a dress is too much? Or should I just stick with jeans?" I asked Elexia.

It was Friday afternoon, and I had invited Valeria and Elexia over to get ready for the party. They promised that they would have cleared out by the time Aaron had come over to pick me up though.

"Well, for the record I'm going with a badass look." Valeria piped up. She wore a simple white t-shirt with a denim jacket and dark-wash jeans.

"I think dresses seem like you're trying too hard, Em," Elexia said.

She walked over to my closet and fished out a tie-dyed blue halter top and red-blue plaid shirt, selecting a pair of light blue jeggings to match.

"Ok, I admit this seems perfect," I said reluctantly. I put it on quickly and sat by the table to sort out my hair and make-up. I dabbed on some glittery silver eye liner and rimmed my eyes in black kohl. Then I decided to pull my hair up into a high ponytail and secure it with a aqua hair tie.

"So," I said happily. "What do you think?" I asked.

"Hmmmm," Valeria murmured. "I think the silver is pushing it, but all in all it seems awesome."

"Em!" Elexia exclaimed. "I love it! He's not gonna be able to keep his hands off you!"

"Ok then, so I'm all set," I said, taking a deep breath and letting it all out. I glanced at the clock.

"Oh, holy fudge cakes he's going to be here any minute now, go on, get in a taxi and head over to his place" I gasped.

They scurried out of the door, Valeria yelling "See you at the dance," as Elexia dragged her into a taxi and left.

I paced around my room in anticipation.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed with the intro to #thatpower.

"Hi Emerald, can you come outside please, I'm nearly there," Aaron said. The phone was filled with a whistling sound, almost as if there was a huge wind blowing.

"Ok," I replied. "I'm coming out."

I walked out onto the porch and sat on the hammock waiting for him to come by. In a few seconds, a figure on a motorcycle came to a screeching halt in front of my yard.

"Wha..." I gaped as Aaron clambered off his bike and walked over towards me.

"I know what you're thinking," he said, smiling mischievously. "I live 3 minutes away. Its not much of a risk." When I still didn't look convinced, he added, "What's life without taking risks?"

My mouth opened and closed. I sighed. "Fine. I guess that thing," I looked at the motorcycle out of the corner of my eye. " Is my only way to the party that all of my friends are at. So fine. Awesome." I said sarcastically.

"Come on up then," he said waving me forward enthusiastically, already halfway to the bike.

"Are you sure this is safe?" I asked doubtfully.

"Sure as hell, Em." He moved closer to me. "Don't you trust me?" He murmured.

It was strange, but I did. Even though I had only known him for a few days, there was a sense of trustworthy-ness around him that I couldn't ignore. If the time ever came, I knew I would trust him with my life. I gave in with a sigh and climbed slowly and cautiously onto the killing machine. Aaron climbed up in front of me and revved the engine, causing it to growl and purr underneath me. As he kicked the bike into motion, I shrieked and wrapped my arms around his waist and we sped down the twisty road towards his house. Warmth radiated through his leather jacket and I pressed closer to him, breathing in his scent of pine needles and rainy days. If I could bottle up his smell I would.
