Turning with great effort, then leaving the kitchen to return to Allen, I still couldn't explain my actions. That wasn't fair to Kaylin, nor myself as I was now painfully aware. Giving a quick and polite smile to Allen, seeing his eyes turn to a slight glare at me as I returned from the kitchen. More accurately that I returned from seeing Kaylin. Alone. My growing suspicion, that seemed more and more correct as the seconds ticked away, was that Allen kept her close. Very close, and the reason as to why wasn't sitting well with me. Witnessing how she read him, defused him when he started to get upset, was constantly tense, jumped at any loud noise, and even pulled away from my touch. The toll of her physically fighting or rejecting any touch from me hurt, but I knew soon Kaylin would embrace and crave me. Kaylin may be already able to feel that cosmic pull towards me, she wouldn't be able to understand or even justify it currently. Soon, none of us in this house would be able to deny, or halt what the universe and the Goddesses above had created.

"Dessert smells delicious," my failed attempted at breaking the silence, as I took my place back in my chair.

"My Kaylin is an amazing cook, she could be a professional," he boasted with pride in his eyes, even as his voice dripped with ice. Nor could one miss how he called her 'MY Kaylin', she wasn't his. She was mine now, he would need to accept this quickly to avoid hurting Kaylin.

"Is that what she's going to college for? Or is she still in high school?" I fished for more details, he opened the door, my soul wanted to seek and devour any knowledge of my intended.

"Heavens no," he exclaimed, his laughter even holding judgement. "I home schooled Kaylin, she's very smart and graduated when she was 15. We haven't decided a college course for her. Yet. I only want what's best for her and will settle for nothing less," Allen stated. A wave of relief rolled over me. Home schooled meant no boys. That relief was short lived, listening to Allen it was easy to see those 'we' moments seemed more like 'I'. The longer this dinner went on, the more this house seemed like cage for one of its occupants.

"I made your favorite daddy!" Kaylin exclaimed as she made her way into the dining room with her fathers and my dessert. Hesitating for a fraction of a second on whom to serve first, before placing her father's down in front of him. Kaylin held her breathe; I could see it physically, but anyone could sense the room tense with her. When no reaction came from Allen, Kaylin continued breathing and placed mine in in front of me. It was obvious that she was now keeping a safe distance, I couldn't hold her actions to heart. Not after peaking behind Allen's curtain. "Can I get you anything else daddy?" she asked standing between us, always facing him.

"No, my kitten, you've done more than enough," he professed. Smiling up at Kaylin, he seemed very genuinely surprised about his praise. Like it was foreign, even to him. Which is odd, since he's done nothing but brag on her all night, why be surprised? This was truly all coming together and painting a picture I didn't want to see.

"Can I get you anything else Mr. Cape?" she asked, looking at me but standing closer to her father than I liked. That along with his insistence for making Kaylin a trophy of possession, it was trying my control. If Allen wanted to play this childish game, I wouldn't let him go unmatched.

"No, my dear, I'm just fine," I promised sweetly as I picked up my fork and began to dig in. With my hearing could hear Allen's blood pumping more rapidly, he didn't like my comment whatsoever, I can't say it didn't want to make me smile. It was a polite and very normal comment, so he couldn't outwardly be upset with me. This did confirm my suspicion that he was a very possessive man, sadly just not how possessive.

Kaylin smiled warmly and left to retrieve her own dessert then take her spot across from me at the table, very far away from me. Once seated, eating her own desert, Allen began talking about work finally. Saying that as promised he would help me transition into the company, which meant actually coming into the office.

"So tomorrow I will be heading up to the office, if you'd like we can start then? Hit the ground running," Allen said, taking some of the warmness out of his voice. I took special observation of Kaylin's eyes snap over to her father, with a confused look on her face. Allen in turn took notice of my observation and reached over to pat Kaylin's hand, like stilling a spooked animal. Watching her tense but not flinch under his touch only drove my suspicion that something truly awful was going on here.

"Forgive Kaylin," he chuckled again, with a touch of arrogance. "I work from home and rarely go into the office."

"Sorry daddy, it was just so unexpected," she apologized softly, eyes downcast and shoulders turning in.

"It's okay kitten, I'll be helping Mr. Cape with his orientation. I'll be going to the office every day this week, maybe some of next week too, if needed. You'll be fine princess," his voice was dismissive of her anxiety but sounded gentle enough. Allen had spoken, that was that.

"Of course, daddy," Kaylin said smiling, a sad smile didn't reach her eyes.

No doubt that there was something going on in the Smith household, something that I knew once I discovered the truth, it would alter Kaylin's life. Mine included. I intend to find out very soon of course, as Kaylin would be with me soon, I hoped. My purpose now was to my soulmate, to Kaylin, no matter who or what I discovered along the way, there was nothing I wouldn't do for her.

Sorry it's been so long since I posted, I never intended for that to happen. I'm going to start updating regularly. Sorry if this chapter is long winded, I needed Scott to see how Kaylin and Allen interact. Please comment and vote. Would love some love or feedback.
