Chapter 4
Cleo laughed out loud and ate another spoonful of chocolate ice-cream. “I can’t believe you!”
I smiled and shovelled my own spoonful in. “Well you’re going to have to get used to it. I think Jesse’s okay with it too.”
She rolled her eyes. “Who care what Jesse thinks?”
“I do, he’s my friend and Ant is his.” I informed her confidently.
She shrugged. “Whatever you say.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I demanded.
“Nothing.” She smiled at me and took another scoop of chocolate.
I sighed and rolled onto my back. “This is going to be a good one.”
She lay down next to me. “Maybe,”
“I’ll bite, what’s wrong?” I asked her.
“If you like Jesse why are you going to go out with his best friend?” She wondered turning her head to look at me.
“Because that’s how the game works. Besides, I hear the word girlfriend and I’m outta’ there.” I promised her. “It’s not like Jesse will hate me for it.”
“I guess not. But Ant’s is a nice guy. Are you sure you’re not going to go all soft on him after dating him for a while?” She wondered biting at her lip.
I shrugged. “How bad will it be? We’ll be together for like ten days.”
“You’ve only known Jesse for two.” She pointed out.
“That’s different. He showed up on my front porch and helped me unpack my room. He was a friend to me.” I explained.
She emptied the ice cream container and tossed it at the trash can and scored. “You’ve got a point.”
I nodded happily and got to my feet. “Thank you.”
“Do you want a lift home?” She offered.
I shook my head. “It’s only around the block, I can walk it.”
She walked me to the door and waved goodbye. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
I nodded and waved back. “See you then.”
Then I started walking down the street towards my house.
I hadn’t walked far before I heard a car driving down the road behind me. I didn’t look back and then it came up close to me and stopped.
The voice was unfamiliar but sounded gentle. “Get in.”
I turned to see Jesse behind the wheel and Ant in the car beside him. I climbed into the back seat and grinned at them both.
“Where were you guys going?” I asked curiously.
“Your place, Ant asked to come and I figured you wouldn’t mind considering it would only cause your mum more trouble.” Jesse explained to me.
I nodded in agreement leaned forwards. “So Anthony, why’d you want to come and see me?”
He shrugged and turned around to stare at me. “I couldn’t wait until tomorrow.”
I nodded and turned to Jesse. “So the demon didn’t show?”
He shook his head. “Nah didn’t text either. One of the guys said they saw her chatting up a couple of blokes on the oval.”
“And you haven’t been stressing about it?” Ant sounded astonished.
Jesse shrugged. “I’ve been thinking about dumping her anyway.”
