Trey
The sound of the soccer coach blowing his whistle resonates as I jog around the track in the late April warm weather. I stop at the end of my fifth lap and walk to the bleachers to sit and catch my breath.

I watch as the other joggers pass by and gaze out into the distance at the middle school soccer players who practice. After my meeting with Antoine's little brother, I've gotten a little peace. He told me to give her some time. How much time though? I'm growing impatient.

My classes have been going well and final are in another two weeks. As my students stress out and study, I'm chilling. Haha.

My phone rings and I shuffle into my bag to retrieve it. My screen brightens with Liberty's name. I bite my lip as I pick up and say hello.

"Trey, I'm just a little curious."

"What?"

"You stopped chasing after me. Why?"

I pause before saying,"Because I thought you needed space. I can't chase you forever..."

"Oh... How's life in DC?"

Is she trying to make conversation as if nothing happened.

"Lonely without you."

She sighs. I can imagine her right now. She's probably relaxed over her bed in her shorts and tee.

"I do miss it. I've been meaning to go down there to visit Gab and Rih....."

Is she trying to hint at something?

"Really. When?" I ask a little eagerly.

"After exams, but before I graduate on the 20th..... I want to see you though." She admits.

My heart skips a beat and butterflies flutter in my stomach. I must be dreaming.

"Uh-um, yes. Of course. I would like that very much." I stammer.

She chuckles.

"Even if we aren't together, I would still like to be friends, Trey." She says.

My heart breaks a little, but I try not to voice it.

"Yeah. That would be cool..."

After hanging up, a bittersweet feeling comes to me. Yes, Liberty is finally talking to me, but she only wants to be friends? That's gonna take a while to get used to. How can I change her mind though?

I grab my stuff and leave the track to walk home. Thankfully, the track is within a 5 minute walking distance from my house. I can't stop thinking about finally seeing Liberty after almost 5 months.

I call Antoine and tell him the good news.

"I knew she'd come through." He says not surprised.

"Thanks, man. I was really getting worried." I admit as I open the front door to my home.

As I turn to lock the door behind me, someone swings me over the head with a HARD object, and I'm immediately out cold. Great.
