Every month, Heechul, the most reknown personality on campus, would throw a party just 'cause he could.
It was the place to be for anyone who was someone at the university and if you got an invite, you were IN.
The first time Hyukjae got an invite, he knew it had to be a fluke. He did not know how Heechul knew about him... or why anyone would bother to give him an invitation. Hyukjae was in the Biology department. No one in the Biology department was EVER invited. And Hyukjae was scared of Heechul. The stories that went around informed this straight-edge student that the guy was altogether too loud, too open, too elite, and just... too everything. Going to this party was a bad idea, in Hyukjae's opinion.
So when he found himself receiving a second invitation, he didn't know what to do. After much justification and a rare whim, he decided, why the hell not? And before he even realized it, Hyukjae was headed to this wild IN party (alone) located at some ritzy hotel on the outskirts of the city.
Once there, he was at a loss again. At one point in his life, he had wanted to fit in with these people, but he didn't really have the ego for it. He didn't have the guts to dance in front of others, and girls always looked past him for the prettier men. Amongst the experienced party goers, he felt like a fish out of water, or with all the muggy and stuffy air, he felt more like a suffocating monkey.
He stood there with a can of beer in his hand, untouched (someone had drunkenly shoved it into his hand with a slurred "I dun fingg I kin dringg enemoarrr~" before melting into a crowd of dancing people; he stared for a while, since he didn't drink really). Fairly awkward.
The place was pounding with upbeat club music, pounding to the point where Hyukjae ached to join them. His body wanted to drown in the beats and the sounds and let go of all the inhibitions that he'd kept to-out of fear or out of inability, he didn't know anymore. The only way that would happen, though, was if he downed this suspicious looking drink, and it wasn't going to happen anytime soon. As lax on hygiene as he was, he had some idea of what this innocent-looking beverage could have touched.
He found the nearest receptacle to dump the can. As he was pondering the wastefulness of his actions, a hand grabbed his shoulder, and turned him to face the owner of said hand, a boy with a wide-eyed smile and shaggy hair.
"Hi!"
Hyukjae stood cautiously still. "Hi?"
"I'm Donghae. Come with me, please!" The boy smiled and headed for the stairs, dragging Hyukjae and his guttural protests along behind him.
They were heading to the lobby, down another hall. The hands that pulled him had an iron tight grip, and Hyukjae feared the worst. It was a fake invitation, they wanted to publically humiliate him, it was a prank, it was-
The boy named Donghae pushed through double doors that led him into... a mosh pit? Or some small lounge-room version of one. Hyuk looked around and winced at a piercing scream that wasn't meant for such a small stage, but the crowd bellowed for more.
He was headed towards the back where the bar was, still being pulled with more force than was necessary.
"Heechul! He's here!" Donghae directed Hyuk to a curly bright-red-haired... guy.
"Yah! What took you so long!?" the guy said (yes, it was a guy, Hyukjae confirmed). "This is it? I expected... hmm, I don't know what I expected, but-Tablo has crap taste. Take it away," Heechul said, waving a hand to shoo the Hyuk-pest away.
"Excuse me?" Hyukjae, who had felt only out of place before, now felt three-inches tall. It was a prank, he should have known-how did he think that it was real?-and all he could do was just stare like an open-mouthed fish.
He couldn't move, he couldn't speak, he didn't know if he should've walked away-but he didn't have to when Donghae cut in.
"What are you talking about? Stop jokin' around. The kid is perfectly fine and Tablo has awesome taste. Are you jealous?" Donghae teased with that never-ending grin (or was it a smirk?) on his face.
Perhaps he could have been offended that they were speaking about him like he wasn't there, but that, he was used to. However, to say that Hyukjae wasn't even obfuscated in the slightest would be a flaming lie.
Then, he heard a new tune erupt from the stage. And a mantra from the audience. "Mithra! Tukutz! Tablo!"
He swerved at the mention of the latter.
A man of his own height and frame trotted up onto the stage, going along with the music, and hyped the crowd with his perfect English.
"Oh baby, don't you know?
You don't know my name
I couldn't sleep because I was thinking of you
Oh so beautiful..."
The voice, the lyrics hypnotized him. Hyukjae couldn't stop watching the powerful stage presence. He couldn't look away, couldn't move. He was caught in the rhythm of the words and caught by the gaze of the main rapper aimed straight at him (he must've been standing in the way of Heechul, but he didn't care).
"Oh! I know I can't have you
But you're in my head (If I can't touch you)
It's just wishful thinking (I can't say it)
Watching from far away (You know I do)
I love you (You don't know who I am).
"Like what you hear?" the ever-cheerful stranger inquired.
"Yeah..." he mumbled, still enraptured with the flow of lyrics and the charisma exuded from the vocals. Among other things.
It was like Tablo was staring straight at him, directing every rapid phrase of poetry toward him, but that couldn't be, Hyukjae dismissed. It was his imagination running away from him. His vision was blurring. He was dreaming with his eyes open.
Shrieks and shouts broke out from the crowd, surrounding Hyukjae as he realized he had stepped closer toward the stage. He was unfazed by the push and shove of the unruly audience, unable to tear his eyes from his new idol. Donghae followed and watched Hyukjae and beamed, while Heechul just scoffed.
An arm was thrown around Hyuk's shoulders and the two became the stillest figures in the room as Donghae's lips lifted into a swift grin. He spoke in a low tone, "He invited you."
"If you've fallen in crazy love
Boys and girls say 'Oh! Oh! Oh!'
If you've fallen in stupid love
Boys and girls say 'Oh! Oh! Oh!'
If you've fallen in helpless love
Boys and girls say 'Oh! Oh! Oh!'
If you've fallen in love like me
Boys and girls say 'Oh! Oh! Oh!'
Even if you don't know who I am."
"Oh..." whispered Hyukjae.
