Chapter 7 - Last night

“Only a dinner,” Luke scoffed sitting by Moon’s window. “Someone is trying to set you and Mr Lend up.” Moon had invited him in, Lisa leaving the door open; it wasn’t very ladylike for an unmarried woman to allow a man into her room so Lisa and Moon had compromised by leaving the door ajar.

“I doubt that,” Moon neatly put lipstick onto her lips. “Why would someone go to that much trouble?”

“You would be surprised at the extent that the upper-class goes to, when rumours circulate. Do you even know who is attending?” Luke asked opening the window allowing air in. “I would prefer being outside tonight does this ‘contract’ have any way of getting us both out of dinner tonight?”

“No, my father told me to go, so I have to go.” Moon picked up her shawl from her bed. “You’re very talkative tonight Luke.”

Luke smiled; it was a genuine smile, one that she had rarely seen from him. It brightened up his purple eyes. “I enjoy your company; I think it’s also because we both know where we stand with one another.”

Moon couldn’t help smiling back, “Thank you for the mask earlier.”

“No problem,” Luke looked out of the window quickly, “I think our ride is ready.” He jumped up, offering his arm to Moon.

“One thing Luke,” Moon said as she took his arm. “Try not to stab me tonight.”

Carbe House was glamorous, the building was made entirely out of white marble, arks and been carved into the building. The building was at least four stories high with balconies that had guards standing. Surrounding the building was a grand wall with steal spiked gates, thrice the size of an average man. The road leading up to the building was decorated in lights so that travellers could see their way to the house.

“How many people do they expect to be here?” Luke asked peering out of the window.

Moon sat with her legs beneath her, she rested against the side of the carriage wall, her eyes half closed. “I really don’t know, I don’t suppose many, Louise was giving the invites herself.”

Luke chuckled, “An odd custom, what’s the point when you have servants?”

Moon chuckled in her dreamy state, “Now you’re sounding like an uppey.”

“I am an uppey Moon, so are you!”

Moon’s eyes snapped open in fury, her hands clenched as if she was holding a dagger. “Not everyone accepts their birth rights like some.”

“Moon, just accept that even though you do not accept the upper-class the slum people want to be the upper-class, no one wants to be poor.”

“Not everyone wants to be rich either.”
