Chapter 15 - Latty

Latty’s bar was famous within the slums, it was a place for people of all types to come together within the slums. Latty himself was a man in his mid forties his face seemed completely covered in hair, a beard that covered half of his face wisps of it were discoloured and grey and his eyebrows were thick caterpillars. Beneath all that anyone could see the aging eyes and wrinkles. His clothes were stained and old, just like the bar. The place reflected the Latty or Latty reflected the bar, it was old and gritty, filled with people throwing chairs and gambling. It was late enough for people to start shouting across the room in their drunken states, leering intensely at the barmaid or starting fights. The place smelled of smoke and beer, it was a satisfying smell, the more the place stunk the more money Latty had made.

He hadn’t expected to see two uppeys walk into his bar, both dressed in their best. Adolescents from the upper class sometimes came into slum bars, they weren’t too clever and didn’t ever try to blend in and when they did it almost seemed a useless waste of time. The man was dressed in the traditional Alvin shirt with a ruffled collar and sleeves. He wore loose trousers around dark boots, the woman beside him however wore a dress that was unmistakably flamboyant. A light pink dress bubbling out at the waist with a tight corset. The skirt was not nearly as wide as some other Alvin uppeys, it was altogether rather sleek. The woman wore white gloves and it was remarkable that she had not been robbed yet. The bar happened to be in the Northern side of the slums. However it was still the slums and although simple, the jewellery was most likely worth more than a man made in a year.

“Dressed awfully nice for these parts, aren’t ya?” Latty exclaimed as the couple drew closer to the bar. They both walked with the air of arrogance, ‘or maybe that’s your imagination.’ Latty smiled at them, he knew the smile must have been produced several times, it was the type of smile produced by all slummers when in the presence of a person wearing upper class clothing. Every slummer produced it at least once, the extra polite smile when a person was about to rob you without you knowing it.

“We came from a ball, thought it would be nice for a drink,” The man spoke, he held a large unnerving grin on his lips. Latty had been working in this bar since he was young and he knew to follow his immediate instinct about a person. Latty didn’t like the boy but he had money and money was always a win in his books. The boy jumped with one fluid movement onto a stool by the counter.

“We don’t sell your kind of drinks here,” Latty’s tone was bitter and he almost regretted the words. The boy didn’t seem to mind or hadn’t registered the comment, ‘Thank the spirits that these uppeys aren’t too smart.’

The woman hoped up on the stool beside the man with the same elegant movement, Latty’s eyes instantly turned to her. The girl looked familiar although he could almost swear he had never seen her. He remembered every uppey that had ever entered his bar and she wasn’t one of them. The black hair tied above her head and the green eyes projected back at him. A smile pressed onto the girl’s lips as she noticed the attention, “Hello Latty.”
