Michael's POV

I sat looking down at my hands. I could see the hand clasping around my own. Following up to the arm I could see Lara. She smiled and laughed at something Calum had said. I looked to see her tuck her hair behind her ear and could see the light flicker off of the ring on her finger.

Whenever I saw it I knew I made a mistake.

I let out a sigh, wanting to shake Lara off of me but ultimately knew it was wrong, plus the last thing I wanted was Lara giving me hell for every last thing.

The doorbell rang and I assumed it would be Ashton next to arrive. I turned my head to greet them, and felt my jaw drop.

"No way.." I muttered. I could never decide if Luke looked better or worse when I saw him. He looked like he aged too fast, but he did not look miserable - despite the panicked expression on his face.

"Hey Luke, hi Ashton!" Lara smiled and walked over to them. She hugged Ashton but when she went to go hug Luke he put a hand up to stop her and shook his head. She reluctantly backed down.

And then? Well then she was more interested in everyone else rather than me. Lara was like that, she always wanted to go out, have fun, party with her best friends. It was saddening for the fact that she would never play anything with me.

My eyes traced Luke around the room as he stuck to the edges of the crowd. I could no longer tell if he was scared of if he was angry.

"Why don't you go talk to him?" Ivy asked as she presented herself in front of me. "I'm sure he would love to hear a little bit of why you have to say."

I nodded, I felt like I had to man up eventually. So I walked over to Luke and flashed a smile - at least the best I could muster. He looked me up and down and did nothing.

"Hi Luke." I said.

"Hi." He replied, there was no essence to his voice. He spoke in monotone and did not even offer a facial expression.

"Been a while." I said. I was absolutely dreading the conversation.

"Mhm." Luke replied.

"What have you been doing with yourself?" I asked, my voice squeaked in such a way that my nerves showed. While I was positive that Luke picked up on it, he said nothing.

"Working, I suppose." Luke shrugged. Surely there was more to his life than that. "What about you?"

"Um..Well I'm not-so-happily engaged to Lara?" I said, Luke cocked an eyebrow when I spoke. He seemed to be confused.

"Don't marry her if you don't like her, that's not fair." Luke replied. I expected a cold tone, or one heated with anger. But as always, there was no substance to it.

I had to think about what he said, however. Do not marry her if I do not like her. Seemed logical enough.

But what I would marry no longer existed.

"No, Lara is great and everything." I said, even I sounded unsure of myself.

"Alright." Luke blinked.

"So..No lovely lady in your life?" I laughed nervously and Luke sighed. Clearly unamused in me.

"I'm not even going to answer that question." Luke replied. "I won't even entertain it."

"Well you are entertaining it in the sense that you're entertaining me with your response." I gave a small smile, hoping to get one out of Luke. He gave a smirk but it was almost unnoticeable. It would only take someone who was truly looking for it to see it.

"You didn't seem too fazed when I said I was engaged to Lara." I said, Luke's attention was grabbed. I could tell by the reaction on his face.

"Well what was I supposed to do? Throw a fit?" Luke asked, there was no hint of sarcasm. He was purely confused. I missed have a sarcastic Luke. I missed everything about the Luke I used to have. Looking at this so official and so serious Luke almost made me want to cry. "What did you want to hear?"

"I don't know." I said. "Something, I guess."

"Well I don't want to discourage you," Luke said. His eyes flickered down to his hands as he rubbed his palms together. "I am invited, aren't I?"

"I didn't think you would want to.." I shook my head slowly.

"Michael, I'm not going to hate you because you're going to marry Lara. But if you are going to marry her at least make sure you want too." Luke said. "From what I've seen it only looks like you're marrying her in order not to hurt her feelings. Just my opinion."

"No it's true," I said. "I guess that's pretty true."

"You might want to reconsider where you stand then." Luke said and walked off.

It was odd, I expected more of a reaction, some kind of sadness or anger on his face. He did not look happy but he really did not look like he wanted care at all.

If he truly did not care about me at all, well then I would have to get over it. I always knew that Lara did care, but did I really want her too? I wanted Luke to care.

He was a misfit, and I was too, but I wished that he would be a misfit with me. We were the couple that never made sense. A preppy boy with a nerdy boy. This was all my fault in the end, and there was nothing left of myself. I just wanted to be able to go back. I wanted a foolish, childish Luke.

"Michael, are you alright?" Lara asked me, I felt her hand resting on my shoulder and I could see the ring on her hand and let out a sigh. "Was it a bad idea to come to this party?"

"No," I shook my head. "No not at all, we can go sit."
