Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.  T. S. Eliot

Michael's POV

*Five Years Later*

"What? No. You have to go around and then come up from behind," Luke explained. "And then you use that button to use the special box thing." I had to smile, leaning against the door frame as I watched him interacting with our seven year-old daughter, Stephanie. They were sitting on the couch playing video games and Luke was trying to help her.

"Oh, I see." Stephanie responded.

Luke and I had married after my last failed wedding, although Luke had a lot of anxiety about it. There was no reason for me to have cold feet with him, though. Eventually we adopted Stephanie, who had been three years old at the time of adoption. The two really got along well.

Although sometimes Luke became a little..Weird. Like before, he did a lot to make sure he stayed himself and stayed as sane as he could get. It was almost like having the same Luke again.

And eventually we finished the original task we set out on when we first became friends - making Luke good at video games. Which is the only reason why I'm allowing him to play with Stephanie.

They played together a lot - I often joined in as well - instead of being a family of sports we were a family of gaming. No matter what it was, Stephanie was involved in every type of game we loved.

Luke was good about it too, at first he protested that it wouldn't be healthy. But we made sure Stephanie played with the neighborhood kids outside, ate properly and held a healthy lifestyle. As time went on, Luke became more and more alright with the idea of Stephanie playing video games. Especially since he knew that she would not be alone - most of the neighborhood kids really liked coming over and playing with Stephanie.

She was a cute brunette girl, with high spirits and a lot of intelligence. She was usually pretty giddy. Luke often said if she was actually our child she would of taken after me. Since he believed she took up most of my personality and habits. I had to disagree though, she was pretty organized and clean.

"Hey both of you," I smiled from the doorway. The two turned their head to me. "How about we go to a trip to the mall, you can get a new game Steph."

"Yay!" Stephanie smiled wide and raced out of the room to go and fetch her shoes and jacket. Luke sat on the couch for a minute before standing up and walking towards his shoes near the door.

"Hey babe," I said as I walked towards Luke. He raised his eyebrows to me and waited for me to continue. "I just had a question."

"Yeah?" Luke responded. "Go ahead, I'm listening."

"Was wondering if - oh, I don't know - if you might be interested in having a date night with me." I smiled.

"Yeah, what the hell do you plan to do with Stephanie?" Luke responded. "You can't just leave her here alone."

"Let's say I figure that one out, I just wanted to know if you would ever be interested in going." I smiled.

"I don't really know, Michael." Luke said, biting down on his lip. "I just don't understand what the point of going out is when we have just as much fun here."

"Yeah with Stephanie." I sighed. "I just want to spend at least one night alone with you. We never get to anymore."

"Because we have Stephanie." Luke said. "It's just part of the responsibility."

"No it's not, my parents went out all the time!" I snapped and Luke's eyes grew wide.

"Yeah and how did it make you feel to have your parent's gone all the time?" Luke asked, there was a tone of sympathy to his voice as he spoke. "I don't want to pick up bad habits. You agreed to adopting Stephanie, as her parents we carry out an obligation to assist her."

"I didn't know adopting her meant that we could never spend any time together." I sighed, I was not trying to start an argument. I only wanted to be able to have alone time with Luke. The only time we spent alone was at night after Stephanie had went to bed - which was nice - but I could only go so long without having special time with Luke.

"Michael, please just leave it." Luke sighed. "I really do understand that you want to be able to go out with just you and me, but it's not going to happen. I'm going to go fetch Stephanie."

"Alright." I said, this was my cue to go outside and start the car.

Just as the door opened I heard another door slam, and I turned to see Luke rushing down the stairs. "What's the matter?" I immediately asked.

"Stephanie heard us." Luke said, a panicked tone to his voice. "Michael, look at what you did!"

"This is no time to start fighting." I sighed and walked up the half-flight of stairs to Stephanie's room. I tapped my knuckles against the door and opened it, immediately finding a pillow hitting against my face.

"Seriously Stephanie?" I sighed as I threw it off to the side.

"If you don't like me then you can leave!" She yelled and I went wide eyed. Now I had another problem on my hand, my daughter believed I disliked her.

"Stephanie, that's not the case at all." I said as I shut the door.

"That's not what it sounded like.." She sniffled and wiped her snotty nose across the sleeve of her gray and pink striped shirt.

"Steph, use a tissue." I said as I sat down on her bed. "And that's not at all the case, I've just wanted to spend time alone with Luke but we also have to watch you so it's kind of hard. You want to spend time with just one of us at a time, or sometimes just with your friends. You might get mad if I say no, right?" We always referred to ourselves by our first names, since Stephanie only called us that as well. There was nothing weird about it to her.

"I guess so.." Stephanie said.

"It's not like I don't like you," I said, the last thing I wanted was for Stephanie to feel like I did not care. She let out a sigh and glanced at her hands.

"I want you to be able to go out too," She said. "And be able to play together like I play with my friends. So the both of you should be able to figure something out and I will do it." She flashed a smile. "Luke needs to loosen up a little."

"He's like that because he cares." I said in a slightly mocking tone and the both of us laughed. It was true, but it was such a cliche statement. "I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, Steph."

"You didn't, I'm alright." She flashed a smile and stood up before shooing me out of the room. "Now go find me a babysitter so you can go out."

"Well not tonight!" I replied.

Stephanie rolled her eyes and continued to push me out of the room. "Figure it out." And she smiled and shut the door and I had to laugh.

"My daughter is smarter than I am.." I shook my head slowly.

"You know I am!" Stephanie yelled through the door.

"Knock it off with the sass or I will ground you!" I laughed as I walked away from the door.

I really made out of this deal like a thief. I had two very important people in my life and all I had to do was stand someone up.

I would call that worth.
