Band of Brothers
The bandage around Tris's leg was no longer white. The blood that trickled down her leg still turned it red. The group had to go slower because she couldn't walk at a normal pace. Every step she took sent waves of pain up her leg.
Shadow walked slowly with her. He offered Tris to help her walk but each time she turned him down.
Zane was the scout for the day. He didn't walk very far in front of the group. He didn't want to get separated because he didn't know where he was going.
The day seemed to drag on forever. The group didn't cover much ground and had to stop frequently.
"Tris, I can help you walk." Shadow smiled at Tris.
"No thank you." Tris tried to pick up the pace but couldn't. She didn't want to seem helpless and weak. She just wanted to get out of Kevland as fast as possible.
Shadow shook his head. He knew she was just being stubborn. They could speed up a bit if she would listen to him but fillies are fillies and Shadow let Tris do what she wanted.
"I think I hear a river!" Zane looked around happily, listening to the sound of rushing water.
"Yep. That's the river that's gonna set us back a few days." Shadow kept walking next to Tris.
"Set us back?" Tris looked at Shadow. She barley put any weight on her leg as she walked. It hurt to much. Yet she didn't want to say anything to any pony about it.
"Ya. The river is to fast moving for us to cross it. There's a bridge but it's not a short distance." Shadow saw the river as they made it to the top of the hill.
"Why can't we just build a bridge?" Zane tilted his head.
"Because that would set us back even further. There's a town near the bridge and we need to get Tris there so that she can get actual medical help." Shadow looked at Zane. Zane looked at Tris's leg.
"I'm fine. I don't need any help!" Tris swished her tail as they walked closer to the river.
"No you are not fine, and yes you do need help. Tris this isn't a game you can't get through this on your own." Shadow rolled his eyes sick of the way Tris had been acting lately.
"Then how did you escape Kevland the first time? Huh? You seem to do fine on your own!" Tris stomped her hoof but that made her put pressure of her back leg. She whinnied quietly in pain and lifted her back leg up fully. She slowly laid down.
"We can take a break here." Shadow nodded at Zane who laid down as soon as he heard that and closed his eyes taking a nap.
Tris swished her tail. Shadow did not want to talk to her. He didn't even want to look at her but he was stuck getting her out of Kevland because that's the type of colt he was. He stayed true to his word and never broke a promise.
Shadow sat down on the other side of Zane closer to the river. Then pulled his sword out and started to clean it off.
Shadows sword was old and it showed. It had been chipped, bent, cracked and many other things, but he still kept it because it was the one thing he had of his family.
Tris watched Shadow clean his sword. She felt bad for the way she was acting but she wasn't about to apologize for it. Tris slowly started to close her eyes without even realizing it.
Shadow let the two sleep for a while. "Alright time to get moving again." Shadow stood up and put his sword away. Zane and Tris both woke up slowly.
"Are we going to that town?" Zane yawned and got up. Tris laid there still dreading having to get up.
"Yes." Shadow nudged Tris with his hoof making her get up. She put no weight on her leg.
"Why can't we just stay here for a bit longer?" Tris looked at Shadow in pain. Shadow just looked at her. How weak Tris was, not from the wound but just how she acted in hard situations. Shadow swished his little tail.
"We have to get you to a doctor. Unless you'd like to stay like this forever." Shadow turned and started walking. Tris slowed them down to much, they were already so far behind.
Zane trotted after Shadow. Tris slowly followed the two, limping every step she took. She almost collapsed so many times and kept falling against the trees. The light brown fur on her leg had become stained red from the dried blood.
Shadow picked up the pace. He didn't feel any sympathy at this point for Tris. If she didn't want to live it was one less pony he had to worry about getting out of Kevland. He knew he shouldn't think that way but it was true. Tris was the reason they were falling behind. Tris was the reason for the conflict in the group.
Zane walked next to Shadow. He wanted to know why Shadow was walking so fast but he didn't bother to ask. He could tell his friend was angry but he just didn't know he was angry because of Tris.
The ground was flat, hard packed dirt on a set path. The river was on the right side of the path, guarded by slippery rocks. The forest was on the left.
The two colts were so far ahead of Tris. She wanted to call out to them but she was afraid they'd think of her as weak. She started trotting as best she could manage but her back leg was just dead weight at this point. She sighed. Why did this have to happen to her?
"Pick up the pace Tris! We aren't going to lose you!" Shadow snorted and continued to walk fast.
Zane looked back at Tris then at Shadow. He could see she was in pain but Shadow knew how to survive out here and Zane didn't. He kept his mouth shut feeling bad for his filly friend but he knew Shadow was right.
