MARY
"EEEEKKKKKKKKKK!!!!" I flail around, sending out random punches and kicks as I spin in my seat at the cafeteria. When I calm down, I hear Emily laughing, Mackenzie trying to keep one in, and see Lance walking away, looking at me and laughing. (Friend laugh, not bully laugh.) Lucky him I didn't actually punch him.
He and I have been having a "poke war" where we run up to each other secretly and jab each other in the side. He always gets me, but I rarely see him without him noticing me."HAHA HA HA!!! Mary! He got you again!!!!" Said Emily. We all sit on the same side of the long cafeteria tables, Emily in the middle of all three of us. I can see Mackenzie poking her head around Emily, laughing, but not nearly as much as Emily.
"It's not her fault she doesn't have eyes on the back of her head!"
"Ugh! These people are infuriating!!!" I say. At least they're not talking about "Larry". I shudder in disgust.
"This makes me wonder why "Larry" is such a big thing, if you both go jabbing each other." Emily says, still laughing, but reaching for her phone, which she usually reads all lunch long while Mackenzie and I talk. It makes me wonder why she sits in the middle.
Anyways, "Larry" is a stupid freakin' ship name for me and Lance. Everyone thinks we'll make a great couple, and I really just can't believe we can't just be friends. It seems like almost everyone wants us to be a couple. Like, bruh, why can't girls and guys just be friends?!?!?!????
"Ugh! Can we please just talk about something else?" I beg. Emily is now in full reading mode and I am only talking to Mackenzie.
"SEVENTH GRADE, LISTEN UP PLEASE!" Yells the Dean ( in charge of students, kinda like a principal) It takes ridiculously long for everyone to up shut. (That's the way I say it) When we finally do all get quiet, she says "Will Mackenzie, Emily, and Mary please report to the front office immediately?"
We all have shocked faces, and probably the same ideas running through our heads, "Did we get in trouble? Are we out of dress code? Do they have some weird reason to search through our stuff?" We all gather our things, take final bites of our favorite foods, and walk silently all the way to the office. When we enter, we see my mom, Mackenzie's mom, and Emily's dad.
"You're not in trouble, don't worry." Says the lady at the desk. We all let out a breath. "You're just being checked out." Yes! No more school today!
"C'mon" our parents say as Emily's dad holds the door open. We all say "Goodbye" and "See ya tomorrow" as we walk outside and into our parents cars.
MACKENZIE
As I sit in the back seat of our van, I begin to wonder why we had all been picked up at the same time. However, my thoughts are interrupted by my mom. "So, how was school Kenz?" She says with her always overly happy voice.
"Fine. We had a playing test in band, and I think we did a pretty good job." I play the alto saxophone in Varsity (or intermediate) Band.
"Cool. What song did you play?"
"March of the Aliens."
"Never heard of that one before, is it for your Halloween concert?"
"Yeah, it's cool, but only the name is like the theme. I don't see why we can't play something more "Halloween-ish"."
"Yeah, that is a little weird."
We ride the rest of the way in silence, so I can tell something is wrong. Usually my mom likes to tell me about her day and ask more questions about mine. When we get home, I realize that she didn't pick Emma or Ellie up. Strange. When we reached the house, we walked in and my mom turned around to me, her smiling face changed to very serious, scaring me. "Mackenzie's, I wanted to tell you with dad here, and sooner, but now it's an emergency. I'm sorry I didn't tell you before, but...."
