What is Creepy Pasta?

According to the Creepy Pasta wiki "Creepy Pasta are essentially internet horror stories, passed around on forums or other sites to disturb and frighten readers", but is this actually true? Take for example the Creepy Pasta named Bloody Mary. The story regarding Bloody Mary started long before the advent of the net and can trace it's origins back to around the early 1900's at least. Some say the origin of the myth stems back to Queen Mary which means the legend goes all the way back to the late 1500's. Some say the legend traces back to the Salem Witch trials. This makes the Blood Mary myth one of the oldest urban myths out there.

Some might say that Creepy Pasta is just a repackaging of the urban myth where the internet is involved, but I think Creepy Pasta is the genre actually coming to have a name much in the same way Fanfiction became the name for stories derived for already existing stories. Creepy Pasta is comprised specifically of the urban myths like Bloody Mary which survived to be passed around on the net with fervor, but also new urban myths. Old myths not yet passed around on the net may still gain the status of "Creepy Pasta" if someone takes the time to write them down, but if they're not being passed around doesn't this mean the urban myth's died?

Prior to the advent of the net the origin of the urban myth found itself almost always lost, but with the advent of the net we can trace some of the new Creepy Pasta back to specific writers. In the old days though people would try guessing how a particular urban myth came into being, and the ways these myths came into being ended up becoming urban myths themselves. Other times a serialized series would try to come up with their own origin for a given myth. I've always loved urban myths, but I've also liked the stories about why the myths came about as well. Which made me start to think...

Important Note: If you're creating an original Creepy Pasta and trying to get it passed around on the net you're not writing fanfiction as the story you're writing is not derivative of another writer's work. I notice this misconception cropping up during the second Fanfic Friday contest for Halloween, Fanfic Fright Day.

What would an urban myth be like in some of my favorite fandoms? This question popped up as I thought about urban myth and the origin stories behind many of these myths. The challenge is to write an urban myth for a given fandom based on how society and popculture works within that given fandom. The stories need to be a one-shot between 1,000 to 13,000 words.

Rules

1. Follow all basic rules put down under the rules section.

2. Tag with the proper category tag, fandom tage and #fandompastamyth.

3. Writer's are only allowed one story for this per fandom. (See bonus challenge!)

4. An OC may be used as the urban myth, but no romance between said OC and a canon character.

5. Rules for canon may be bent as urban myths do bend the rules of logic, but in the same tolkien you must still work within the context of "willing suspense of disbelief".

6. Absolutely no crossovers. Already existing urban myths may be used for inspiration, but the idea is to be original and create something fitting the fandom youv'e choosen.

7. You must be open for others to use your fandom urban myth for the bonus challenge.

8. No posting as part of a collection. The idea is for your urban myth within your fandom to stand out so that other people want to use the myth.

Banned Fandoms - Creepy Pasta's banned because the point is to come up with a creepy urban myth for your fandom, but Creepy Pasta's already urban myth. Mythology from the original source is also banned as it's again already a form of myth and fairy tails in their basic form are banned as they are story archetypes. Banned to are fandoms which deal with urban myths. No original Creepy Pasta for this challenge either. You've got to relate it to the fandom you're writing for.

Bonus Challenges - For the bonus challenge to work well other writer's need to participate! The added bonus for this one is you don't have to complete the main part of the challenge to participate in the bonus challenge for once. Stories need to be tagged #fp-myth as well as #fpm-story'sname-writer'sname. Writer's are allowed to use their own stories for the regular challenge for the bonus challenge.

The idea behind this bonus challenge is to take the urban myths created for the regular part of the challenge and expand upon these myths. This means though asking the original creator questions regarding their myth rather then making out right assumptions. This also means knowing the fandom you're writing for.

1. The only OC you're allowed to use is the urban myth OC if said writer created one.

2. You're not allowed to change up the rules for the given urban myth that the other writer created.

3. There is no maximum word count, but one-shots need to be at least 1,000 words and a chapter pieces need to be at least 5,000 words long.

4. Use the proper category tag, and the proper

5. Crossovers are allowed, but only between existing myths. For these you'll need a #fpm-story'sname-writer'sname for every story you use, which mean there is also a limit to the number of stories you can use within your crossover, or within fandom crossover.

6. There is no limit to the number of stories you can write.

7. Be sure to give a shout out to the original writer on the first chapter. In other words dedicate the piece to said writer.

8. You're allowed to spoof and satire if you want was well.

9. Otherwise stick to the rules given for all challenges.
