What does it mean to be disabled?
A long time ago having a disability meant being treated differently. At times one could expect oneself to be treated as an invalid even if one wasn't an invalid. Being different also used to be a negative thing which found the individual ostracized simply because they're different from other individuals. There also used to be a lot of misunderstandings regarding various disabilities.
With knowledge things have gotten better, but there are still misconceptions floating around regarding various disabilities. Some people still feel like a person with a disability should be treated like an invalid, and don't give the person with the disability the chance to flower. Other times I've seen people thinking it would be cool to have a particular disability without realizing the disadvantages of having said disability. Some go so far as to pretend they really do have the disability only to show how unaware they are of particular disabilities.
This challenge is meant to help bring awareness to various disabilities, but it's also to focus on the struggles a person with disabilities go through.
What disability would a particular canon character actually have? Maybe they have a learning disability, or they're on the autism spectrum. You the writer are going to figure this out, but in order to do so you'll need to do some research. The characters can't be made out of character. The goal is not to make a character blind, or paralyzed. This is about using deductive reasoning on the part of the writer, and then to apply this deductive reasoning to writing a story. The exception though is if the character has a disability in canon, or the deductive reasoning based on research leads one to the conclusion they will end up with a degenerative illness of some kind.
