Chapter Twenty-One
I had asked my mum and dad to stay at home instead of meeting me at the airport, so when the taxi pulled up in front of the house, it wasn't really a surprise to see not only my family stood at the door but a bunch of reporters.
I grabbed my holdall that was in the back seat with me and after paying the driver, got out and started to make my way to the front door which was about five feet and eight or so nagging pricks away.
When Sammi died, I honestly thought that I wouldn't be able to move because they followed me everywhere, I just chose to ignore them and now that they've found her killer, they have started to come around again. I swear, if I find out who gave out my address I'm going to kill them.
"Mr Harper, how do you feel?" - "Will you be there when he goes to court?" - "Are you still mourning?" - "We'll pay you if you give us an interview." - "What was she like?" The questions were endless and I was starting to lose my patience with them. But I also knew that if I punched one of them, I would be on the front of every major newspaper with rumours running wild.
I was about to say something when I saw a figure come from around the corner and when she saw the reporters, she looked as annoyed as I was. "Will you all go away? He's just arrived back from Spain after seeing his fiance's killer! I don't think he gives a fuck about giving an interview!" Kelsey yelled above all the noise, which surprised me. I didn't think she could be that loud.
They all seemed to look at each other with just as much surprise as I was before stepping out of the way and letting us both go past.
As soon as I was in the house, I was pulled into a hug by Jess, Claudia and my mum before they pulled away and my mum planted a kiss on my cheek. I went to go into the living room with everyone else when a hand pulled me back. I glanced to see Kelsey stood there.
"Are you okay?" She asked softly and I shook my head.
"Not really, but I don't want to talk about it." I mumbled and she did another thing that surprised me - she hugged me. I wrapped my arms around her and her small frame just fitted into my arms like always.
"I'm not leaving anytime soon Kyle, so if you need to talk, you know I'm here." She told me as she looked up at me and I gave her a small smile and gave her an extra squeeze before following everyone else into the living room.
I was actually grateful that everything had been swept under the rug. I mean, she acted like nothing had happened and I was so thankful for that. She knew that what I had said meant nothing and that was one of the reasons as to why I fell for her years ago. She never held grudges or take anything straight to heart, not that I ever said anything as harsh as what I did before to her when we did go out because back then, I was in love with her and I would have done anything to make her smile not cry.
As I wandered into the front room, I noticed Calvin sat in one of the armchairs which made me smile. I hadn't seen him in a few weeks because his university schedule was taking up a lot of his time recently, so for me to see him again was great. We did the typical man hug thing and although I hadn't been smiling much, seeing my best mate certainly did. "What you doing up here?"
"I heard you might need cheering up, so I thought I'd take you out." He announced like I didn't have a choice in the matter and before I could shake my head and decline, he pulled me into the kitchen. Once we were alone, he looked more sincere. "I don't do soppy moments, but are you alright man?" He asked genuinely.
I nodded my head. "I'm pushing through slowly." I told him.
He slapped me on the back. "Good. I even brought Leon up here, he's in town already warming up the seats. You're parents know, so are we good to go?" He looked me over and nodded. "We are, come on."
We went through the back door to try and avoid the reporters and thankfully, Calvin didn't think with just his dick as he had parked down the back street so all we had to do was take a few steps before we were in the car and driving away from it all.
***********
We were currently the only one's in the pub now. But then, we were howling out cheesy songs and it was nearing two in the morning.
It felt like I hadn't had this much fun in years and all I had to do was bring my two mates over here, go to a pub and get wasted. All night, I hadn't even thought much about the bastard that killed Sammi, but I think that's because if I did focus on it whilst drunk, I would do something I would regret and as much as I would like to punch his sorry face in, I can't do anything back here.
The owner came over to get the last of the empty glasses. "As much as I love you're singing, could you please start to set off now, I have an early morning and need to lock up. "He asked and we all nodded our head.
Leon and Calvin got up at the same time, both falling over and banging their heads together, which made me laugh for about five minutes straight.
After a further ten minutes, we managed to stumble out of the door and thankfully the landlord had rang us a taxi and seeing as it took us so long to get out of the pub, it was sat waiting for us. But then, Leeds on a Monday night isn't the liveliest of places.
We all climbed in the back all smiles. "My head still fucking hurts." Leon complained making me laugh again. I was that pissed that virtually anything was making me laugh and I hadn't been that type of drunk in ages.
The cold air must have sobered me up a little because I couldn't help but appreciate the two clowns sat with me.
