A New Dauntless Legend

Chapter 2

I'm looking over my usual spot in the Pit. And as usual, nothing is happening! I love this job, but at times it can get boring.

I keeping going over on why Taren would dare me to sing in the Pit. He knows I don't like all eyes on me. Plus I haven't sung in a while. It was just a hobby. Nothing more then that.

Well, we are going to play another round of Candor or Dauntless tonight, so that should be interesting.

After my shift I head to the cafeteria for lunch. None of my friends are here yet, but our parents are.

The cafeteria is full of voices, as it always is. I sit down at our usual table and start eating. Hamburgers, one of my favorites.

I'm about to take a bite when I feel strong arms wrap around me. Taren.

"Hi." I say putting my burger down.

"Hey." He says

"What's up? What took so long?" I ask

"Gus needed to talk to me, so that took a little bit." He says

"What did Gus need to talk to you about?" I ask

"Just that I need to take on a few night sifts. Why, I do not know." He says

"Will you be able to play Candor or Dauntless tonight?" I ask

"Yeah, I need to do a night shift tomorrow and about two after that. So I will be there tonight." He says

After he says that all our friends walk in. We talk about what time to meet up and whose apartment to do it at.

We decided that the guys will be coming over to our apartment and to meet up at 6:00pm.

We have everything ready for Candor or Dauntless, the guys just need to get here. All the girls already have on extra layers. I'm doing the same thing I did last time.

I hear a knock on the door and I go and answer it. I let the guys in.

We all sit in a circle on the floor in the living room. We start the game.

"I'm going first." Raylan says

We all agree.

"Okay, Shawn, Candor or Dauntless?" Raylan

"Dauntless." Shawn answers automatically.

"I dare you to ask out the girl you like." Raylan dares.

Shawn gives Raylan a look that reads, 'really?'.

I look and see that Lindsay is now looking at the floor. She has said that Shawn probably would never ask her out.

Shawn let's out a breath as if he is nervous.

He gets up and walks around the circle. So it's someone here. He stops in front of Lindsay. She shyly looks up at him. He reaches out his hand, so she can get up. She takes it and stands up.

"Lindsay, will go out with me?" Shawn asks

Her eyes widen and she has a smile from ear to ear. I can tell she is very happy and excited about this.

"Yes!" She says obviously excited.

She and Shawn hug each other. Both are very happy about this.

"Shawn your turn!" Zander almost yells.

Shawn and Lindsay sit down next to each other.

"Taren, Candor or Dauntless?" Shawn asks

"Ummm, Candor...I guess." Taren answers

"How many fears do you have?" Shawn asks

"Every time I go in, it's five fears." Taren responds.

I look at Taren than at the tattoo on my wrist, it's a pheonix with the number five in between the wings.

"Taylor, Candor or Dauntless?" Taren asks me.

"Dauntless." I say

"I dare you to go to the Pit and sing." He dares me.

My eyes get big.

"Actually I choose Candor." I say quickly

"Uh, can't do that. It's against the rules." Wade says

"Ugh. I'm not going to back out this time, because I have a feeling you are going to keep doing that one until I actually do it." I say

"How did you know?" Taren says

I give him a slight death glare.

"Let's get this over with." I say

We all get up and walk to the Pit. Right before we walk in, I pause.

"Wait, what do I sing?" I ask

"What do you want to sing?" Taren asks

"Just put on something by...Carrie Underwood." I say

"Got it." Zander says

With that Zander takes off running. I'm guessing to where the sound booth is for the music.

I'm really nervous. I've never sung in public. How will this go?
