A New Dauntless Legend

Chapter 29

It's been two months. I'm trying to get over it. I really am, it's just also really hard. He was my first real love. I'm in the cafeteria eating lunch with my friends. I've started to smile, but it's not my actual, normal smile. This smile is faint, but still there.

We talk about a lot of random topics. The table is full of laughter, but I haven't completely gone back to my normal self. That means I haven't gone back to laughing my normal laugh.

Tonight all of us are going zip lining. At first I refused, but then I remembered how he was trying to help me with my fear of heights. He enjoyed being up high. He loved doing the zip line. I'm doing this for him.

Once the sun goes down we get on the train. It's Kristen, Wade, Urina, Madison, Shawn, Lindsay, Zander, Raylan, and I. We get to our stop. We head into the Hancock building and get in the elevator. When we get to the top we see five people already up there.

"Carter, William, Scarlet, Hunter, Erin, what are you all doing up here?" I ask

"Hey, we were about to do some zip lining." Carter says "I take you all are here to do the same thing?"

"That would be correct." Raylan says

A few seconds later, Zander gets the harnesses. The first one to go is Scarlet. She jumped at the opportunity. She is laying on her stomach. Zander pushes her off and she goes flying. She is screaming with joy. How can people do this?

Then Hunter goes, then Raylan, then Erin, then Shawn, then Wade, then Madison, then Urina, then Carter, then Kristen, then Lindsay. Now it's just Zander and I.

I step back a bit.

"Taylor, I know your scared." Zander says "I know you have a fear of heights. You can do this."

"I don't think I can, Zander." I say

"Come on, Taylor." He says

"No." I say

"Do it for him." He says "He loved heights. He would have loved to do this with you."

That makes the click in me. I slowly walk in front of the harness. I get in. I'm laying on my stomach. I look down and I feel like I'm about to vomit.

"Don't forget to pull the break at the bottom." Zander says to me.

"Okay." I say

"3...2...1!" He counts down and then pushes me off.

I scream going down for a few seconds. I then stop screaming and I take in the beauty of the city. I spread my arms out to the side. I feel like a bird. I now get why he enjoyed this. He felt free. He felt like he could fly. I'm smiling. This is the first time I have done my normal smile since him.

I look to my side and I see Navy Pier. It's so pretty at night.

I start to go down. Down to where everyone is. I look back for the break. I get it in my hand and I pull. I stop moving just a few feet from the wood wall. I undo the harness and I fall into the net of bone and flesh underneath me.

About a minute later Zander comes down.

"So how was it, Taylor?" Zander asks

"It was fun." I say

"Will you do it again." He asks

"I make no promises." I say

We then head back to the Dauntless compound. When we get there we head to our apartments.

Everyone has commented on how much they enjoy seeing me smile and laugh again. We are in the Pit heading to our apartments when Patrick comes up to us. Ugh.

"Hey Taylor." He says with a smile.

"What do you want?" I ask

"I just wanted to say that I'm sorry about Taren." He says "Yeah, you seem to have gotten over him by now. Good for you."

I'm getting frustrated at this point. I don't like what Patrick is saying. Patrick isn't sorry for what his dad did.

I get so furious that I attack him. I don't get to him. The guys are trying to hold me back. I have Raylan, Shawn, Wade, and Zander holding me back. After Patrick walks away I start to ease up.

We continue to walk to the apartments. Once I get to my room, I put on pj's, wrap myself up in the blanket and I fall asleep crying.
