I'm headed to Navy Pier. That is where I climbed the Ferris Wheel during initiation. That is where Taren tried to help me get over my fear of heights.

Once I get to the Ferris Wheel, I see Taren sitting in one of the carts.

"We aren't going to go up are we?" I ask a little worried when I get closer to Taren.

He looks at me and smiles. He stands up and walks a few steps towards me.

"We don't have to, if you don't want to." He says kindly.

"I don't want to." I say softly.

"Then we don't have to." He says

We walk to the cart. I sit down and Taren sits next to me. We talk for a few minutes, then Taren's watch beeps. I'm guessing that's signaling that it's midnight.

"Happy Birthday." Taren says softly, looking at me with a smile.

"Thank you." I say with a small smile.

"I got you something." He says reaching into his pocket "Close your eyes."

I close my eyes. Taren reaches for my hands, he puts my hands straight out, in front of me. I smile. I then feel a small box being placed in my hands.

"Open." He says

I open my eyes and my eyes get big. What's happening?

"Umm...Taren, what's this?" I question

"Open it, and you'll see." He says

I open the box and I see two, white gold, infinity rings. The infinity symbol is very small, so it just looks like a loose twist. One ring is bigger than the other and is simple. The other ring, has small gemstones going across one of the twists.

I give Taren a questioning look.

"These are promise rings. With these, we are making a promise to each other. This will symbolize that always be together." Taren explains

I smile and look him in the eye. He takes the smaller ring out of the box.

"Taylor, do you promise to keep this promise to me?" Taren asks

"Yes." I say softly

He places the promise ring on my left ring finger. I then take the bigger ring out of the box.

"Taren, do you promise to keep this promise to me?" I ask

"Yes." He says

I then put the ring on his left ring finger. We stay there talking for a little while longer, we then head home.

"I almost forgot to ask you," I say once we start to approach my apartment "How are you doing with the lose of your mom?"

"Umm, I'm a little sad. But thinking back to my childhood with them, I'm not that sad. Not in the good way of getting over her death, but kind of in a relief. I know that sounds bad, but now there is one less person who hurt me and could still hurt me." Taren explains

"So when you have kids you wouldn't want them to meet their grandfather?" I ask

"No. I will not have my dad get involved with my kids lives. He beat me when I was a kid, I will not let my kids get beat." He says

"Completely understandable. That's how my dad was and is with my grandparents." I say

"Well, I will see you in several hours." He says stopping once we get to the door.

"See you in several hours." I say and I walk inside.

I quickly go up to my room and put on pj's. I get in bed and fall asleep. When I wake up I hear a lot of voices downstairs. I quickly put on black leggings, a black, dri fit shirt, black combat boots. I then decide to leave my hair down.

I head downstairs and see all my friends and family. Mom, Kristen, Aunt Marlene, and Taren are in the kitchen making breakfast. Raylan, Lindsay, Madison, Shawn, Aunt Shauna, and Urina are finishing putting up decorations on the walls. Dad, Uncle Zeke, Aunt Christina, Aunt Lynn, and Uncle Uriah are putting simple decorations on the tables. Uncle Will and Wade are setting up the table and counter. I like the color scheme: black, dark red, and dark grey.

I start to walk down the stairs and after about three seconds everyone sees me. Oh gosh. I don't like it when everyone is starring at me. I'm starting to get very uncomfortable.

"Happy Birthday!" Everyone says in unison.

I smile and give my parents a hug first. After a few minutes of giving everyone a hug, we get to eat breakfast. It's pancakes with sausage patties. There is a big cake pan, at least a foot long and nine inches wide, full of pancakes. There is another big cake pan, with the same measurements, full of sausage patties.

"Care to explain the ring, Taylor." Dad questions looking me.

I look at Taren and he looks at me. Taren quickly looks away and quickly look back at dad.

"It's not an engagement ring." I start off sounding like I'm guilty of something "It's a promise ring."

"And what is this promise?" Dad asks walking towards me.

Taren explains the promise that the ring represents. I also include in that Taren has one just like mine, but without the gemstones.

"Okay." Dad says and backs away.

I let out a breath of relief. A few minutes later we all sit down and start eating. After breakfast we head to the Pit. When we get to the Pit I see a big banner that says:

Happy 20th Birthday Taylor!

Oh gosh. I thought I told them I didn't want a big party. I didn't want them to make a big deal out of this. I turn around and look at them and give them a questioning look.

"We know you told us not to make a big deal out of this." Kristen starts saying.

"But, it's your twentieth." Aunt Christina finishes.

"Well thank you." I say

Yes, they went against what I wanted and said, but they had good intentions. And I love them for it.
