The school bell rings, signalling the start of my History class. I happen to really enjoy history, as my teacher really does know how to make the classes interesting and appealing. We are currently discussing the Chernobyl incident.
I walk into the rather colourful class filled with posters and get greeted by Professor Greene with a warm smile. He's a really nice man, always going out of his way to help people. He's in his mid-fifties with unnatural brown hair and soft green eyes. He used to be a professor at Harvard at one point. How he ended up in this hell hole is beyond me.
I take a seat in the far left corner by the fairly clean window and take my jotter out. The view out of this window isn't anything special. Just the local park situated next to the school. It's full of trees and benches, quite relaxing actually. A black Labrador runs across the large patch of grass, chasing after a green tennis ball. Are they even green or yellow? Or a strange mix of both?
"Do you mind if I sit here?" I hear a guy ask, tapping on the plastic seat next to mine. I turn around in alarm, glancing at the boy. He's fairly tall, with brown shaggy hair and a cute smile. He seems quite nerdy, with his white button down shirt and Harry Potter bag. I've not seen him here before. Maybe he's new? Well, I guess it wouldn't really hurt to let him sit here, would it?
"Sure, I don't see a reason why not" I smile shyly, moving my heavy bag onto the wooden floor and take my pencil out as I do so. He takes a seat, takes out a plain new jotter and a pen. Yeah, he's definitely new. He's scanning the large classroom, everyone in it and I bet you he's calculating the best way to escape if zombies broke into this room.
"The people at the front could serve as a distraction and while the zombies eat their flesh, there's a metal ladder always positioned under this window. I could get the window open while you grab the metal pipe sat atop the wooden cupboard behind us. Then we climb down quickly and run like hell. I mean, assuming that's what you're thinking about right now." I lean in and whisper, startling him a little. I've given a lot of though to this topic the first day I came here, so I'm assuming he might do the same because we seem quite similar.
He looks at me in astonishment and smiles a little. "That obvious, huh?" He says rhetorically, shaking his head a little. That motion on its own, I find very appealing. Okay, let's take a step back. He's a stranger who's name I don't even know.
"(Y/N)? Do you know which of the reactors the meltdown occurred in?" Professor Greene calls on me, startling me a little and causing me to get a little flustered. I hate when I get called on while I'm not paying any attention. Prof seems to do that a lot to me.
"T-the fourth one, sir." I speak a little quieter than I intended, but he still takes it as an answer and nods in approvment. This causes me to release the breath I was holding in me. Although he is my favourite teacher, he can be a pain in the ass sometimes.
"Well, nice to meet you (Y/N). I'm Kevin. Kevin Tran. And yes, that does seem like a good escape plan in my opinion." He whispers back to me and copies off the board at the same time. Multitasking, I like it.
I follow up and write down the title, along with the question on the board. "Now, please turn to the closest person to you and discuss the question quietly. You have five minutes" the professor says, taking a seat behind his large oak desk and writing something down while surveying the class.
I turn to the Asian and read out the question. "What time and date did the meltdown occur?" He looks at me a little ashamed and embarrassed, maybe because he doesn't know the obvious answer. Well, obvious to me anyway. I've done a lot of studying on this subject, so it's relatively easy.
"Easy peasy pumpkin squeezy. 01.23am on the 26th of April 1986. Remember the date and you'll pass the upcoming test" I joke, seeing him chuckle as well. It's a really pleasant sound, making me feel warm inside. Oh man, Kevin seems pretty awesome.
"Well, (Y/N). Do you have any other interests apart from remembering weird dates of catastrophic events?" He asks as we still have four minutes left for the discussion. He's actually curious about me? Wow, that's a first. Not that I particularly mind.
The next few minutes are spent debating over various hobbies that we enjoy and have in common and whether or not Captain America is better than Iron Man. But I found out that we have a crap tone of things in common. Including video games and comics. He truly is wonderful. And intriguing, to say the least.
I get slightly startled by the bell ringing and the realisation that this period seemed to have flown by quicker than usual dawns on me. Well, time literally flies by when you're enjoying yourself.
"What do you have next?" I ask, finding it that I don't really want to stop talking to him. He's so easy to get along with and so charming and geeky, holy shit he's per- nope. Nope. Not going there.
"I've got Biology with Mrs McLachalan next. You?" He asks with a smile, pulling out his timetable. He has a little trouble pronouncing the teachers name. I do, however, get a quick glance at his timetable and notice that I'm in most of his classes.
"Same. Most of our classes seem to be together, so you'll be sure to get annoyed with me pretty quick. I'll make sure of that" I chuckle as we walk out of the class, grinning like fools. Maybe I've made a new friend.
