It was that time of the year again where it became so cold that it began to rain before it snowed, and like every year, no matter the age, the kids in Alan's neighborhood ran out and played in it. Alan was a little guilty himself, he loved the snow and the fun snowball fights he went along with with the kids. It was fun but in the end it kind of sucked because your hands got cold and sometimes your butt was numb, but Alan didn't care and neither did the kids in the neighborhood.
It was currently snowing lightly outside, some of it sticking to the ground. Alan grinned, looking out his bedroom window before pulling a sweatshirt over his head, the one he had gotten from his locker, and continuing to dry his hair. It was also that time of year where Aaron got sick and couldn't go to school, which also meant that he couldn't pick Alan up to school and Alan was stuck having to get a ride from his mom, which wasn't so bad just that her lipstick stained his cheek and was really hard to get off sometimes.
Once Alan's skinny jeans were on and his shoes were on his feet, his mother shouted from downstairs, already at the door. "Alan! We've got to get going!"
Alan jumped off the last step and ran fingers through his still slightly dampened hair. She looked at him.
"Sweetie, you sure you don't want to wear a coat? It's really cold outside." She said, Alan shrugged.
"This sweatshirt is really warm." He said, she just sighed and shook her head, smiling at the boy and opening the door.
"Well alright, we've got to get going." She said, walking out the door. Alan followed behind her, walking over to the car quickly and getting in. It was really cold outside and it wasn't much better inside the car. Alan watched his mom hurried to the car, quickly getting in and cranking it up, turning up the heater as high as it would. They had to wait for a few minutes for the ice on the outside of the windshield to thaw out before they were allowed to drive.
Once they were allowed to drive, Ms. Ashby pulled out of the driveway and began to drive down the street, music lowly playing on the radio. Alan had his fists balled up in the sleeves on his sweat shirt, keeping them warm. Alan was halfway to school, looking out the window when suddenly he screamed, "Wait! Stop!" The car slammed to a stop and his mom looked over at him frantically.
"What? What is it? What's wrong?" She asked. Alan rolled down his window. His mother was still demanding why she was stopped.
"Austin!" Alan shouted out the window, seeing the tall boy walking down the sidewalk but suddenly stopping at the sound of his name. He turned and faced the car, really confused as to why this person was calling his name when he realized it was Alan.
"What?" He questioned, stepping closer. Alan smiled.
"Do you need a ride? It's really cold and it would suck if you got sick." Alan said.
"Um..." Austin trailed off.
"Sweetie, if you need a ride I'm more than happy to give you one." Alan's mother leaned over and told him. Austin stared at Alan for a moment, watching his stupid cute smile.
"Fine," he sighed. Alan smiled wider and crawled around in his seat until he was reaching into the backseat, clearing out a spot for Austin to sit down. Austin bit his lip, guilty as ever for watching Alan.
"There you go," Alan said, allowing for Austin to open up the back door and get inside the nice and toasty car. He felt the heat rushing towards his cheeks and the numbing, cold feeling leaving his body. Ms. Ashby was smiling at Austin through the rear view mirror before she began to drive off once more, hopefully not having to slam on breaks in the middle of the street again, but thankfully she didn't have too. She pulled up outside the school in no time and allowed for the two boys to get out. She yelled a goodbye out the window as they walked off, heading inside.
