She was sitting with her coffee halfway lifted to her lips when he entered the shop.
"Hey," she greeted casually, and he smiled.
"Hey." He sat, tilting his head at her. Something was . . . Off? He couldn't quite place his finger on it.
Until he could.
She had said "hey."
She had never started a conversation with a hi before. She jumped right into their topic, she didn't waste time on greetings. But today she did. And he noticed.
"Is everything okay?"
"How . . ." Her voice trailed off into stunned silence. How had he known?
"Gemma?"
She blinked a few times, then smiled down at the table. "I almost . . . You know what? It doesn't matter. It wasn't anything big."
He tried to read her expression, but she kept looking away. It scared her that he cared, it scared her that something close to a connection was forming. Something resembling a friendship was growing. She didn't want to care for him, but she did, and little did she know, he felt the same. Finally he leaned across the table and gently tipped her chin up to meet his eyes.
"Tell me."
