"I was thinking . . . "
He raised an eyebrow at her.
"Maybe this might be a bit harder than I originally planned," she said, eyes locked on the table.
"Is that a reason to give up?"
She laughed, and before she could think anything through, her response drifted through her lips. "My Noah, such a pessimist. I never said anything about giving up."
He smiled. He liked the sound of that. Her Noah. He shook the thought away.
He left soon after that, startled by the time, and in a rush out the door. He arrived to work late, for the first time. He talked with Mia, and their conversations were normal, excluding the few awkward first moments.
Afterwards he went straight home to an empty apartment, snuggled under his covers, and fell soundly asleep.
She did not sleep as soundly, the headlights ridding her of her comfort, staining the inside of her eyes.
