"Come on Sala!" Vesper begged her fairy friend for the fourth time.
Trenton and Haden were already mounted on their horses, which were getting skittish with anticipation. Trenton growled, annoyed that he had to wait this long for someone whom he knew was just giving them a hard time. Sala was the type of girl who would end up coming with them on their adventures no matter how crazy they seemed. This mission's description wasn't nearly as bad as a whole bunch of other things they got themselves involved in.
Sala, still the size of a child but clearly the same age as Vesper, only huffed back in defiance."No way am I going to go somewhere to possibly die!" Her high-pitched voice rang out.
She had her hand on her hips and she walked with a basket of fruit in the other hand. Sala's uncommonly black hair swayed in the wind and sent bits of fairy dust onto her friends behind her.
"Stop whining and get on the horse Sala!" Trenton used his commanding voice.
Obviously he didn't get the whole, speak to those how you want to be spoken too, rule and Sala ignored him. Vesper rolled her eyes. It's as if they are still the same children she met ten years ago, they had never grown up. Sala looked at him, crossed her arms and stuck out her lip like a defiant child.
"No."
Trenton's white knuckled fists were ready to drag Sala by the hair if she didn't come along. She was proving to be quite the difficult fairy. Trenton jumped off his horse and Sala, seeing his un-missable anger began to run away.
"Come back!" Trenton yelled and began to chase her.
Haden turned to look at Vesper and they both shook their heads. What more could they do?
"I guess we should follow them?" Haden asked slightly annoyed at the childish behavior.
"Yep." Vesper answered, sharing in his annoyance.
Haden grabbed the reins of Trenton's horse and followed Vesper, who was holding Sala's horse's reins. They passed through the large village towards the pathway out of the kingdom. Vespera slightly embarrassed that she and her friends were causing such a commotion, rode through as fast as possible, trying to catch up to her impossibly quick friends. Soon they came across a scene of Trenton in the towering Oak tree, trying to grab Sala, who was taunting him up in the air. Vesper's mood suddenly darkened.
"WOULD YOU TWO STOP MESSING AROUND!?" She threw her hands up in the air in frustration.
It's taken this long for an opportunity for me to take action to occur and these two are going to make each step we take infinitely harder!
Then the realization hit her.
We have to leave before Delighla finds out and catches up to us! Otherwise she'll get me. She'll get all of us.
Vesper's usually controlled voice shouted up to them without any restraint whatsoever.
"GET OUT OF THE FREAKING TREE, NOW!"
The two looked down on her, went absolutely still and then continued as if she had never said anything at all. Vesper almost fell off her horse in shock, if it hadn't been for Haden holding her into place.
"I got this," he whispered, his smile growing bigger and bigger.
He motioned with his hands, which caused the tree to sway, and loose some leaves. The wind began to increase and in the blink of Vesper's eyes, Trenton was plucked from the tree and gently placed back on his horse, after Haden had had his fun. He waved his finger as if conducting an orchestra and tossed Trenton all around, in the air. Trenton let out one of the girlish screams that a guy could make, which caused Vesper to howl with laughter. Haden managed a small grin, but was soon laughing as hard as Vesper was. He couldn't help but laugh with that infectious laugh of hers. All the while, Trenton struggled and looked like a cat being picked up by the scruff of its' neck. Upon being set back on his horse, Trenton snatched the reins from Haden and faced away from them, pouting just like Sala. The little fairy was giggling until Haden's gaze fell upon her. Realizing that he was about to the same thing to her that he did to Trenton, she immediately flew back down to the ground and sprinted to her horse within a few seconds.
If only it was that easy from the start. Well, things were never fun if they were easy.
Sala began to ride off at full speed, not wanting to provoke the anger of Haden anymore and shouted for them to hurry up. Trenton, being the competitive child he was, did not want to be last, so he raced after her. Haden locked eyes with Vespera and neither of them wanted to be last either. Vesper, more or less, was still thinking about how they should leave before Delighla could catch them but they raced after their two friends.
Finally the first steps of the journey were being taken. After a few hours of riding, the group began to near the city of Grandola, the place they usually try and avoid.
"Can't we go around it?" Sala begged.
Vesper twisted uncomfortably in her saddle. She felt horrible about this. Grandola is a big city that not only is close to home, but also is the mecca to the black market. Fairy wings, for example are very rare and are on high demand.
"We have to go through it if we want to get to the crystal caves." Charlie answered.
"We go to the crystal caves all the time and we never go through Grandola. Why now?"
"Because it's not safe for us to use the back roads anymore. Even the roads we thought no one knew about aren't safe." Charlie answered.
"And how do you know, you little prick?" Trenton butted in.
" I sent my falcon scouting this morning and I-" He answered.
"Wait. You sent your falcon? How did you even know? I didn't even tell you we were going to leave." Vesper cut him off. "And why are you ahead of us?"
"I didn't scout the roads for you. I was doing someone a favor and then when Haden told me about what you wanted to do, it worked out perfectly."
"Ohh, who are your friends." Sala poked.
"Did I say friends? I meant...um...old aquaintances."
"What's that suppose to mean? Why does it matter?" Trenton cut back in.
Charlie's face began to redden.
"They are just people I helped! Stop asking me so many questions!" He yelled.
"Calm down." Haden said while giving a look to Trenton.
Literally like children. Even bicker like children.
"Anyways, what did your falcon see?" Vesper asked trying to change the subject.
"It doesn't matter. We are taking this road and that's that!" He began to shout again.
"I thought I was suppose to be the hot head around here." Trenton joked, trying to lighten the mood.
The mood seemed to improve a bit but the only laugh Trenton got was his own pity laugh. Trenton's ears perked up and he sniffed the air.
"Sala. Cover up." Trenton commanded.
"Which side are they on?" Which direction?" Charlie asked.
"From behind and coming fast."
Vesper immediately pulled her hood over her head and Haden rode up to her side and Charlie on her other side.
"Uh. Guys..."
"What is it? Do we need to split up? What's happening" Haden desperately asked.
"No, it's two people. Two people we know."
Trenton's face seemed to grow paler by the second.
"Know?" Haden asked.
"Vesper, I'm so, so sorry. I'm sorry." He started to mumble.
"For the love of slockvey, who is it?" Charlie yelled.
"It's Delighla and Marcus."
There was a long pause and the only sounds audible over Vesper's heartbeat was the clip-clops and breaths of the horses. The trees swayed in cool, summer breeze. The defening hum of the cicayda's in the trees couldn't even break Vesper from her shock.
I can't catch a break can I? Delighla had never gone after them before. She either went with us from the start or got left behind. I really hope she's not in a bad mood. We can run but she'll find us and then she'll be furious. I guess there is only one option.
"Stop the horses. We'll wait for them." Vesper commanded.
"Oh and pray that she isn't angry."
