"Love is for the weak people, Alena. Don't ever say that again."

-

"Hey, Matthew?" I asked politely, holding his hand as we walked down the side walk to our red-bricked-school.

"Yes, Alena?" Matthew answered, waiting for my question to be spoken.

"What does that mean?" I ask him quietly, not wanting to make a fool of myself.

"What does what mean?" Matthew asked, giggling quietly.

"What you said to your parents... What does that mean?" I asked him, swaying our hands back and forth.

"Love? It means to care about someone; Like for instance me, I love my parents. They take care of me. Sometimes really mean people will say stuff about my parents, really really mean things. But my mommy always said, "Matthew, be nice to them. It's not nice to be mean to people, even if they're mean to you." Matthew explained, looking down at the sidewalk.

"Why do they say mean things about your parents?" I asked him quietly, afraid to get him mad.

"Because people think my parents are freaks, when actually they're very nice. I love them." Matthew smiled, looking at me.

"You're very calm about this," I told him, looking back at the street.

"Well, I have to be, It's something I've gotten used to," Matthew told me as we walked through the school gates.

Sadly, I had to let go of his hand. We weren't aloud to hold hands with each other; Actually, no boy or girl was aloud to hold hands with each other at school unless they were in a family unit together, or some how related.

Matthew smiled sadly at me, but waved it off and walked with me to our class.

"Estela? I'm home!" I yelled through out the house. Instead of Estela though, Alex came out of no where.

"Hello, how was your day?" Alex asked me blankly, I securely put my back pack on the lowest hook and looked back at her.

"Good, I learned a new word today," I told her, walking into the kitchen as she followed me.

"Yeah? And what word is that?" Alex asked me, I shifted nervously as I sat on top of the stool.

"Love," I mumbled.

"What word?" Alex asked, her voice becoming a little more deeper.

"Love. Like for instance, I love you and Estela," I said, smiling.

"Don't ever say that. Love is for the weak people Alena, Don't ever say that again," Alex said, keeping a firm tone.

"Yes Ma'am," I said, looking down.

"Go to your room, I will call you back down when Estela gets back home so we can eat our lunch," Alex told me, shooing me away.

I nodded my head and hopped off the stool, as tears sprung to my eyes and I walked up the stairs.

All I said was that I love her...

Holy shit, this world is really weird to think about. And yes for those of you wondering this book will be a little like the giver with the family unit and stuff, so total credits to The Giver.

I LOVE YOU!!
