*JJ's POV*
"Watt, you coming with us to that party tonight? It's just at one of those senior guy's house off campus. Pretty sure it's only the football team only, but there might be some groupies there if you know what I mean!" I had only been here for a month and my roommate Todd has tried to get me to go to a different party every week. I had heard one of the older guys talk about having a hangout tonight, but I figured it would turn into a crazy party since it was Thursday. Todd knew I had a girlfriend, but he kept telling me he did too but they don't count once you're at school and on the football team. What an asshole, I felt bad for his girlfriend back home.
"I don't know man, I have some homework to catch up on and I might hit the sack pretty early tonight. I'm exhausted. And regarding the girls, I'm not gonna tell you again man- I have my girlfriend, don't have eyes for anyone else." I told him. He picked up the picture of Samantha and I that I had on my desk from our Senior prom. "Yeah, I mean I guess I can let it slide since she is super hot anyways. Where is she now again? Waiting for you back in Wisconsin?" he asked. "First of all, don't talk about her like that dude or I'll smack you upside the head. She's mine. And second, she's in New York doing a bunch of shows on Broadway." Then it clicked in my mind, she had her first opening night last night and I had forgotten to call her and ask her how it went. "Oh, fuck!" I yelled while jumping up to try and find my phone to call her and apologize till I turned blue in the face.
"What's your deal dude?" Todd asked.
"I forgot about her opening night last night. I haven't spoken to her all week already, she's gonna hate me!" I finally found my phone and dialed her number.
"Hey, you've reached Samantha Coldwell, I'm not here to pick up the phone right now..."
Dammit, her second show has probably already started and she won't be able to talk to me now. "Hey baby, I'm so so sorry for not calling you last night to see how your first show went. Please forgive me, I passed out super early and had class all day today. I'm sure you crushed it though. Please give me a call later tonight and we can talk finally. I'm also sorry I haven't texted you back all week, again- it's no excuse but I've just been swamped, you know how it is, right baby? Well, talk to you later. Love you."
I was so stressed out, playing football here sucked. I have already been talking to my parents about how much I want to walk on at Wisconsin next year, but felt guilty because that means I would lose my scholarship and they would have to pay the tuition there. But it didn't feel right here, I would do whatever it takes to get the scholarship there and play for the Badgers- I just had to find a way to do that. I should talk to Samantha about that, she always knows the answer to stuff like that. Ugh, that just made the pit in my stomach bigger just thinking about how I've abandoned her this week. Maybe a couple of beers with the guys wouldn't be such a bad idea after all.
"Alright man, you got your way- let's go to that party. It's not like I've been to one yet this year..."
I followed Todd into the football house where there was a ton of people packed in, girls wearing barely anything on their bodies and the smell of cheap beer filled the whole house. One of the seniors came up to us, clapped his hand on my shoulder and handed me one of those cheap beers.
"Hey big guy! Haven't seen you out after practice since you've been here. Thought maybe you were a goody two shoes!"
"Just focusing on school and doing well on the team man."
Barely any of the guys seemed to have the drive and ambition I had. They were settling for college football where I was already looking towards the end goal of the NFL which everyone just thought was a big joke.
I lost track of time and was down a couple beers at this point and was feeling pretty loose. The stress of school, football and Samantha had left me. That was until I could feel my phone buzzing in my pocket and when I pulled it out I could see Samantha's big blue eyes staring back at me while I was kissing her cheek. The music in the background but I didn't care, I had to talk to her.
"Hey baby!" I yelled into my phone.
"Hey J, are you at a party right now or something?" She sounded groggy like she was exhausted and had a long day. She still managed to call me after working.
"Yeah, but don't worry about that- I'm here. How was your show? I'm sorry I didn't call you last night-" She cut me off before I could even finish that last sentence.
"Don't worry about it Justin, I know you're busy with school and football. It was good- a big article was written about me and my big return to Broadway in the New York Post this morning, so that was pretty cool."
While she was talking some super drunk girl who was wearing what looked like it could be a tshirt as a dress came up to me and sat on my lap, "Hey- aren't you like, JJ Watt. That super big freshman guy on the football team?" She slurred into my ear and straight into the phone.
"Justin? Who's that? Look- we can just talk later if that works. I really should go to bed anyways. I have an early call time in the morning. Have fun with your new friends."
The worst part is Samantha didn't sound pissed, she sounded disappointed which is even worse. I put the drunk girl down on the couch I was sitting on and ran outside to try and keep Samantha on the phone.
"No baby, I'm here- please talk to me! I'm so-" but before I could finish I heard her whisper "I love you" and her line went dead. I yelled and kicked the object next to me. I had to be a better boyfriend for Sam, I had to make this all up to her when she came to see me in a couple of weeks. All I know is the day she's coming to visit me better be quick. I missed her.
