two years later...

**JJ's POV**

"Happy 21st birthday baby!" my mom and dad surprised me by coming up to Madison to take me out to dinner and bring me some homemade food to keep in my fridge.

"Thanks, hey would you guys mind if I brought someone along with me to dinner tonight?" Both my parents froze and then looked at each other with question in their eyes.

"Like, a date?" my mother asked.

"Yes mom, like a date. I haven't been seeing her for too long and it's not like we're serious but I figured it would be nice for her to maybe meet you guys?" I asked

Again, both my parents looked confused and shocked as if they never expected me to get over Samantha and not date anybody else in my life. It had been two and half years since we broke up and she hasn't made a move to come back in my life. But, I could understand why. My mom had informed me over the past couple of years of all the accomplishments Samantha had achieved; including 4 Tony Awards. She was totally proving herself out in New York but my mother had told me when she had seen pictures of Samantha, she hasn't looked like herself lately but still was as beautiful as always.

My mother was still surprised but my father seemed to answer for her. "Yeah buddy, that's fine. Right honey?" he asked my mother while giving her a nudge and she just nodded in agreement.

"She's basically just a friend that's all." I tried to explain to my parents but they understood. I knew it was going to be a little weird, it not being Samantha sitting next to me at the table and all.

*****

My parents had just texted me telling me they were on their way back over to the school to pick Madelyn and I up for dinner so I figured I would walk over to her dorm to get her.

I had knocked on her door and waited with my hands in my pockets. I liked Maddy, she was a nice girl who played volleyball but she was the polar opposite from Samantha. She had super long, jet black, hair, she was tall, lean and athletic. Maybe that's why we've been hanging out with her and maybe that's why I can't seem to go any farther than dating with her.

She opened the door to her dorm room and her face lit up when she saw me standing there which makes me feel awful for her. I can tell how much she liked me and as much as I tried to like her that much back- I just thought of Samantha. She was smoking hot though, any guy with eyeballs could see that. She was wearing a little black dress to match of her dark features.

"Hi." was all she could squick out to me.

"Hey Maddy, you ready to go? My parents are probably pulling into school now."

The University of Wisconsin campus was so much more 'homey' than Central Michigan and I fit in here a hell of a lot better here. My college football career was taking off here in Madison and I was even played with the idea of going into the NFL draft next year, depending on how the next football season goes.

Dinner with my parents was good, they seemed to think Madelyn was a nice girl. I told my parents I was going to walk her back up to her dorm real quick then I'd be back down to spend some more time with them. We were standing in front of her dorm room and we fell into an awkward silence.

"Thanks for letting me tag along tonight. Your parents seem really nice Justin." she said to me while looking down at her feet.

I cringed when she called me Justin, no one ever called me Justin- only Samantha would whenever she was pissed at me or whenever I was tickling her and she would be begging me to stop.
