Being the oldest in the family and your father nothing but a complete drunk, you had to find a job soon so you could help raise your little brother. You had heard rumors around the market place that the palace was looking to hire some new maids to help in the kitchen or to help clean around the place, basically the dirtiest position of the maids. Thinking that it would be worth a shot, you hurried home and tried to clean your face off some. Picking out the best little dress that you owned that wasn't in complete rags and ran for the palace. Making it past the guards little security check you were ushered into the very back of the castle where all the other staff were located. It didn't look much different than it did on the streets, you guessed it was mostly because they worked there and wouldn't get the luxury the King and Princes got. A prim and proper lady walked up to you with her nose stuck to the air.
"So you wish to take the position of the cleaning maid, correct?" She glared down at you with her beady eyes and waited for a quick response. You had already guessed that she was the head house maid.
"Yes, ma'am. I really need this job, it would help tremendously." You pleaded hoping and praying silently to yourself as she looked you over.
"Stand up straight and lift your chin." You did as she said, she started to circle you slowly, running her fingers through your hair and looking at you from head to toe.
Making her way back to your front she glared at you again giving you this look that made you think you weren't going to get the job. "Yes, I guess you'll do. Be here tomorrow morning. Before the sun rises, preferably, and don't be late. Do you understand?"
"Yes ma'am, I completely understand. Thank you so much for this opportunity, I won't disappoint!" You had to basically shout the last part because she had already started to walk back inside before you finished. She was definitely going to be hard to please. Great, just what you needed.

The next day you were up early enough that once you reached the palace not even the head maid was ready, you were stuck waiting inside the kitchen for her. You had one of your regular dresses on with your hair pulled back into a messy bun, thinking that this was what you were going to be wearing while you worked here. You were incredibly wrong. When the head maid decided to join you down in the kitchen she had brought you black flat shoes with a grey dress and a dirty white apron, along with a grey headband.
"This is what you will be wearing every day, be sure to keep them as clean and tidy as you can get them. Now go change, quickly, and then we will go over your duties for the day."
"Yes ma'am."
After putting the outfit on you looked down at yourself, it was very boring and plain, but you needed this job so it was the least of your worries.
"Okay you can keep your other clothes over here in this sack for the day until you go home. Now I'll give you a tour of the castle and give you the basics on how we run things here. Let's go."
She took off through the door and you hurried after her. As soon as you crossed through the doorway, it felt like you were transported to a completely different world. White marble columns lined with gold trim, giant windows overlooking the village with huge burgundy drapes, and the floor beneath you looked to be white marble as well along with a red carpet going down the center. The hallway was just beautiful, it was huge compared to what you had thought it was like, you couldn't imagine what the rest of the palace looked like.
"Right, now my name is Madam Humpfrey and what shall I call you?"
"Um, Y/N. You can call me Y/N." You were still in awe, looking around at everything, still getting use to the fact that you were in the place you've dreamed of since you were a little girl.
"Okay, Y/N this way please. First things first, I am the person you will always come to in a problem. Everything gets addressed to me and then I will address it to the King. If you are ever in a room and the King walks in, you are to stop what you are doing, do a small curtsy out of respect and do not speak unless you are spoken to. You shall address him always as 'your majesty.' Now with the two Princes, you shall do the same when they enter a room and you address them always as 'your royal highness.' Every morning we arrive at the same time to go over the schedule for the day, some days will be the same and some days it'll completely change. So always be at the meetings."
After walking throughout the entire palace before the royal family was even awake, you two finally made it back downstairs and back into the kitchen. There was only a small meeting this morning and you were given the list of things you needed to do for the day. You accomplished the day's tasks very easily, not once seeing either the King or the Princes, thinking that it was going to continue being like that while you worked here. Little did you know that was about to change drastically.
