We eat our pancakes in silence, with the occasional smile.
"Hospital food is better than what I had thought," says Caleb. I smile, happy he's changing the subject.
"Yeah, it's really good."
"So have you ever needed to be in the hospital overnight before?"
"Yeah, when I got in the accident I needed to be at the hospital for a few nights."
"Ohhh right. I've needed to stay for a couple nights also, but that's a different story."
I'm about to ask what it is when a nurse comes in carrying a bag. "Ebony, this is for you. Your parents sent it in today. They won't be here for physical therapy because they need to work, but Caleb can come if he's allowed." I look to Caleb.
"I know my mom will be fine with that," he says. I take the bag from the nurse and she leaves. I open it, and find my laptop, my book, and a glasses case. I open it and find a brand new pair of glasses. I put them on immediately. It's incredible to be able to see out of my left eye again. I was beginning to be very annoyed with half my vision being blurry and dark.
"You look cute with glasses, you know." Says Caleb, I giggle. He kisses me on the cheek.
There are also yoga pants and a tee-shirt in the bag, and Caleb helps me put them on, so I don't need to walk around the building in the hospital gown. Once I put the tee-shirt on, I immediately begin shivering. Caleb gives me his jacket, the same one I wore on the night we kissed. I slip on a Nike Free Run 4.0, (because I obviously can't fit one over the boot) my favorite shoes that Mum packed in the bag. The nurse left the room number for the physical therapist on the table. It's upstairs, and I still have a huge boot on my ankle and no way to walk, so Caleb gives me a piggyback ride to the elevator and then we arrive on the second floor. It's completely dedicated to physical therapy. There's a small waiting room with a kind looking young woman behind a desk.
"Hello," I say, my chin resting on Caleb's shoulder as he's holding me.
"Hi! You must be Ebony Shields, and are you Caleb?" She asks.
"Yeah, that's us." Says Caleb.
"You can wait over there," she says, pointing to the chairs in the waiting room. "It will be a few minutes." Caleb carries me to the waiting room where most of the chairs are taken, so I sit on his lap. We talk quietly for a couple minutes, and then a girl from across the room comes up to us. She's bald, and has oxygen nubbins like I used to have in her nose. I guess she has cancer. She barely looks ten years old. My heart hurts for her, but I smile at her.
"Hey," she says.
"Hey," I say.
"Are you Caleb and Ebony from Bratayley?"
"Yeah, we are!" Says Caleb.
"Woah, I really like your videos! My name's Shea," she says.
"It's nice to meet you!" I say.
"Why are you at the hospital, are you okay Ebony?"
"Oh, well there was an accident that put me in a coma and I broke my ankle, I'll be fine." I say, she smiles.
"Good, I was really worried when I saw your post, Caleb."
"I was worried as well, Shea." Says Caleb, he smiles and kisses me on the cheek.
