CALEB'S P.O.V.

"Mommmyyy Caleb got the bigger cookie!" Says Hayley. My sisters and I are sitting on the island in the kitchen. We just finished lunch and Annie baked cookies this morning that we're eating for dessert.

I laugh, "you can have it, Princess Hayley."

"Yayyyy!" She cheers and swaps our cookies. Mom laughs and comes over to us.

"What a good older brother," she says. We continue to laugh and she kisses me on the cheek.

"Hey Caleb, wanna give me your cookie?" Asks Annie.

"Wanna give me your's?" I ask.

"NO!" She screams. I tickle her in the side of her stomach and she laughs. The home phone rings and Mom gets up to grab it. Nobody ever calls the home phone.

"Yes, this is Katie LeBlanc." She says "Carter Academy?" Carter? That's where Ebony goes. I look at mom, but her eyes are glued to the floor. "Oh my God, I'll be there right away." She says. My stomach flips.

"Mom, what is it?" I ask.

"Listen Caleb, I need to go. Watch your sisters and I'll call you."

"NO! What is it?"

"It's Ebony, there's been an accident."

"What?" I ask, my heart begins racing.

"Just stay here, baby," she says. Her eyes are frightened, but I can tell she's trying to stay calm.

"NO! MOM I NEED TO COME!" I yell. "I NEED TO BE THERE FOR EBONY!"

"Sweetie-"

"NO! I'M COMING!" I scream desperately as she puts on her shoes and rain jacket.

"Caleb I don't know what to do with your sisters."

"We can come," Annie says. Hayley nods, her eyes full of fear.

"Okay, we need to get there quickly, though." Says Mom. I put on my shoes as fast as I can and then help Hayley. We get into the car.

"What happened?" I ask.

"She fell down some stairs."

"And?!"

"That's all they told me. They said she fell down some stairs and now she's unconscious."

"Unconscious?" Asks Hayley.

"It means she's asleep, but it's because she's hurt." I say, my heart is racing beyond belief. I'm terrified. How hurt is she? I need to know.

"Where are Sam and Laura?" Asks Annie.

"They were working and didn't pick up the phone," says Mom, "and we were put on the emergency contact list so that's why we were called. We pull into the school and see flashing lights. An ambulance is parked outside of the school. We park and run to the building. Paramedics are rolling a stretcher into the school.

"You can't enter the school right now," says one.

"We're with the patient," says Mom.

"Alright," she says, eyeing Hayley and Annie. We walk in. The first thing I see are Ebony's glasses. They're by my feet and cracked, bad. I pick them up and shove them in my pocket. Then I take a few steps closer and see her. Her hair is spread out around her and her head's looking to the side. I can see a big red mark on her forehead, and her head is in a scary puddle of blood. I look at the rest of her and notice her ankle's pointing in a way it shouldn't be. Hayley's head is burrowed in mom's stomach. I take Annie's arm and hold her close to me, like I would with Ebony. They take her and lift her tiny delicate body to the stretcher. Mom, Annie, Hayley, and I follow them to the ambulance where they roll her in and we can sit on a bench next to her. The ambulance begins driving and I immediately take her hand. I look at her, her hair frames her face perfectly. She's pale, too pale, and her hand feels like ice. The paramedics cover her with blankets. Her chest begins moving up and down very quickly.
