I knew I was going crazy when the sound of Velcro made me relieved.
But then again, I had to consider the fact that I was tied to a bed for over two days with nothing to do. Hearing the sound of Velcro linked to the possibility of me gaining my freedom again since the leather straps were looped through a metal squares and the Velcro held it together.
They had strapped me to a bed they used to restrain people who had gone insane to keep them in control. I think instead of keeping me level-headed, they just made me over-think it even more which leads me to believe I'm actually insane.
Hence causing me to act like one. That was my explanation for feeling the jitters and adrenaline coursing through my veins. With the straps no longer holding my legs to the bed, I had to use my own strength to keep them from bouncing off the bed and out the door.
It was the same when the pressure was taken off my arms; I couldn't stop the urge to move them. I pretended to continue to be asleep and tried my best to keep my heart rate from spiking. Once the person left the room, I cautiously peeled open my eyelids and was unable to stop the small grin from forming.
With extreme gentleness and precaution, I pulled out the connective tubes from my body and tensed when I removed the tube connecting myself to the heart rate monitor. Once it went flat, my eyes darted to the door, waiting for anyone to appear but after a minute, no one did.
So, I took as a sign that I was safe and finally free. I swung my legs across the bed but pulled them back up when the soles of my feet touched the cold tiled floor. It sent a shiver up my leg and I tried not to rush it.
Once I was used to the coldness of the floor, I slowly helped myself into a standing position, making sure I was balanced before I released my hold on the bed. My eyes darted to the door one more time, just in case someone decided to make an appearance.
With my eyes trained on the door, I took slow steps with the memory of the time I forgot how to walk burned in my mind. 'Left leg forward, stable, right leg forward,' I reminded myself so I wouldn't fall onto the floor because it would be a pain to get up.
The door swung opened as I was only a few steps away and the slight distraction cause me to lose my concentration. I shivered at the sudden coldness shooting up my elbows and freezing the bottom half of my body.
"Woah!" he exclaimed as he spotted me on the floor.
His arms wrapped around me and lifted me off the cold floor. Even so, I could still feel the chills running up and down my arms but it went away went he gently lowered me down onto the bed. He took the blanket by its edges and wrapped them around me, not once looking at me straight in the eye.
"I still find it pretty weird that you're younger than me," he suddenly said, sitting cross-legged on the floor.
He rested his chin on the palm of his hand. "You might be younger, smaller and a lower ranked than me but so far, you've proved that you're a much better person than I am. I don't know how to make it up to you."
I still made no response but he continued on. "My father presented me with two choices after I told him I met you. He told me that I could let the academy manipulate you into a shell or I could put through tests that my father thought of instead of those given by the academy.
