Sarah's POV
I looked at Alex lying on the couch and honestly she looked a fucking mess and I was hoping Dr Wales would hurry up and get here, the girl was sick.
Lola was leaning over her and talking and just looking at her got me all pissed off again. The bitch had a key. She had a fucking key and never told anyone. If I knew she had a key I would have come over a week ago, it was plain to see that Alex was pushing us all away because in her mind she thought we were in danger. I understood where her train of thought was coming from, but honestly I was pissed that that fuckhead Brandon still had a hold of her, even now, after everything.
Everything. Ugh. Matt. I wanted to kill him, I really did. I thought he might have fought for Alex, but he didn't, not at all and that disappointed me, it really did. I thought their relationship was strong, special, but now, well he was on a date, so I guess it wasn't as special as what I thought. I wanted to slap the inconsiderate prick. Yes Alex had broken up with him, but she only thought she was doing the right thing, and now, after everything she had already gone through, she would have to deal with Matt dating.
"Sarah." Lola said, snapping me out of my thoughts. "The door."
Thank god, the doctor was here and I rushed to let her in.
"What's going on Sarah?" She asked as soon as I let her in.
"My friend, she um, well she's not well and I just want you to check her out." I explained, leading her to the room where Alex was laying.
"Hi I'm Gretel." She said, putting her bag down and squatting next to Alex. "Not feeling to good?"
Alex smiled weakly and shook her head.
"Tell me what's happening Alex?" Dr Wales asked.
"My stomach, it hurts and I just feel sick." Alex mumbled.
Dr Wales nodded and looked at Alex's abdomen. "May I look?"
Alex nodded and Dr Wales lifted her shirt. I think the three of us gasped at the same time.
"What is this?" Dr Wales asked, looking at me.
"She had surgery over a week ago." I explained.
"A week, jesus, this dressing hasn't been touched." She hissed. "Alex, your dressing when is it supposed to be changed?"
Alex frowned. "Three days after I was released, so tomorrow maybe."
Fuck. "Alex." I said. "You got out of hospital over a week ago."
"I did?" She asked looking confused.
"Okay, never mind." Dr Wales said, digging in her bag. "I need to look at this wound, she obviously has an infection, I just want to see how bad it is."
Lola and I stood there and watched her and Alex didn't do or say much of anything except wince whenever the Doctor touched her wound.
"Alex sweety." Dr Wales said. "I think you might have to go back to hospital for a night or two, you need antibiotics." And she stood up. "She needs IV antibiotics and can you please tell me how she ended up in this state?"
I looked at Lola and she looked at me. "Um well." I mumbled and honestly I felt terrible, like the worst friend in the world.
"Never mind." Dr Wales said standing up. "I'll call and ambulance. Are you girls going to go with her?"
"Of course." I told her, I wouldn't leave Alex's side.
The doctor walked out of the room, presumably to call an ambulance and I went and sat next to Alex.
"It's okay Alex." I told her. "It will only be for one night."
"Yes." Lola interrupted. "And then you're coming to stay with Brian and I." And surprisingly Alex nodded, she agreed. "I'll go and grab you some stuff okay." She told her. "Then I'll be back." She looked at me. "Can you call Bri and Zack, let them know what's going on?"
I nodded. "Of course." And as Dr Wales came back into the room I slipped into the kitchen to call Zack.
"Babe." He answered after two rings. "How is she?"
"Well, not so good Zack." And I stopped because I'd started crying.
"Sarah, don't cry." He murmured.
"She's going to the hospital, god we're such shitty friends."
"No Sarah, no we're not, she wouldn't let us be her friend." And I closed my eye's. He was right of course, but still, poor Alex.
"I know, I just wished I tried harder to make her listen to me." I whispered, more to myself than him.
"What matter's now is you're with her." He murmured. "Now go, I'll let the other's know."
"Not Matt." I snapped. "He can go fuck a tree for all I care."
"Alright babe, I won't tell Matt."
"Good. I gotta go." I told him as I heard a knock at the door. "I love you."
"And I love you." He said, causing me to smile.
I hung up, walking to the door and letting the paramedics in. It didn't take long and they had Alex loaded up and ready to go. I jumped in with Alex and Lola was taking my car and meeting us there. The ride was quick and I sat there, holding her hand.
"I'm sorry Sarah." She whispered and I smiled, shaking my head.
"Don't be sorry Alex." I told her. "Stuff happens, but remember, regardless of what happens Lola and I are your friends okay." She nodded. "So you can tell us anything, anything at all, nothing will come between us." And she nodded again, this time with a tear sliding down her cheek.
I held her hand, all the way to the hospital, while the doctor attended her and after, once she was settled in a room. I'd stay and hold her hand. Alex was like family and I knew we were the only family she had, I wasn't leaving her.
Not like Matt. The stupid prick.
I was going to kill him.
