Lucas
I'm the brother of Logan Mabry. A football star that made East Hampton High legendary for four years. Thanks to my brother's awesome Quarterback skills, the football team has won almost every football game thrown at them. He ruled high school as soon as he joined the football team and now that he's in college, it's my responsibility to keep his name alive at our school.
Ha, like that's going to happen.
My plan for this school year is to make people forget about him and to make myself the new co - captain of the soccer team. The second one will be easy, the coaches adored my brother so all I have to do is ask the coach for the position and it's mine. I practiced all summer and learned all of my brother's ideas and tricks from all of his previous plays, it'll be easy. Football and soccer aren't the same sport but Logan was quick and precise. And with his teachings, I got this.
It'll be hard to get people to stop calling me "Logan Mabry's little brother". This is my third year in high school and I am ready to make this a year all about me.
I twist some stray hair into rods and look myself over. I'm about 6'1, which is short for my family. My father is white and my mother is black. I inherited my mom's curly hair and my father's blue eyes. And not to brag but my mom tells me I'm handsome all the time.
It would be a lie to say I didn't notice though. Just don't tell anyone.
"Lucas?"
A voice on the other side of my door distracts me from looking in the mirror and I groan. "What is it?" I tighten the rods on my hair, making sure it looks as if I didn't try to look good today even though I did.
The cleaning lady opens the door. "Your father wishes to speak to you before you go to school."
"Okay, you can leave." I pull up my jeans and wrinkle the sides of my gray t-shirt before putting on my jean and hoodie jacket. I tie the shoelaces of my Michael Jordan sneakers and grab my backpack. With one last look in the mirror, I walk out my room, down the stairs, and into the dining room. My father places the newspaper on his lap, eyes passive.
"What's up, dad?" I place my hands inside my pockets.
He folds the newspaper and sits up on his seat. "Want to sit and talk for a moment?" He smiles tiredly.
"No." I shake my head. "I promised Carter and Julian we'd pick something on the way to school." I lie and tighten my hand on the strap of my backpack.
His smile drops for a second. "That's fine. I wanted to tell you about the other day and that - "
"That I have to behave, better my grades, listen to mom, blah blah blah." I groan. "You've only told me a billion times, dad. Why don't you go back to work and leave me alone? We both know you only talk to me to please mom." I fake a grin and ignore the anger in my chest.
