"I don't understand." I run a hand through my hair. "Am I in trouble?"

Mrs. Adler shakes her head. "No. I'm relieving you of your duties."

"But why?"

"Because I can do that." She places a hand on her chest, her chin pointing at the sky.

"But I still have detention."

Mrs. Adler pinches the bridge of her nose. "I'm letting you go. Go... study or do what people your age do after school." She shoos me with her hand.

"Did Mrs. Heathers approve this?" Julian asks.

"No." Mrs. Adler shrugs. "It's busy with the school book fair and I have enough volunteers."

"So I'm done? No more detention?"

"That's what I've been trying for tell you for five minutes."

"Oh." I look back at the fair. It's full of people looking through books and people standing in line to enter. I see Darren checking people out but Nikki is nowhere in sight.

"Cool." Julian glances at me. "Want to buy something?" He looks at his watch. "I have some time before I head to my part time job."

"Um..." I look back at Mrs. Adler. "Is... Nikki here?"

"No." Mrs. Adler shakes her head. "She has been doing her library duties during lunch and leaving school early."

"Really? Why?" Julian looks concerned. "Is she okay?"

I try to maintain my poker face.

"Not sure." Mrs. Adler sighs. "She said it was a complicated week at her home. That's about it."

"Oh." Julian glances at me, his eyes narrowing.

"Check up on her, will you?"

Julian and I nod. After saying our goodbyes, we walk towards the school parking lot.

"You know something, don't you?"

"What?" I make a face.

Julian rolls his eyes. "You're a bad liar."

"I am not."

"Whatever." He stops walking, glancing at the car beside him. "I have work but you owe Carter and I an apology."

"What do you mean?" I feel my face scrunch up in confusion.

"You've ditched us twice to have lunch with her."

I let my eyes fall into an uncaring expression. "Is that why Carter ignored me in the halls?" What a child.

"You promised we'd play video games at his house yesterday. We don't mind you eating with your girlfriend but we waited for you." He clicks a button on his keys, unlocking his car. "You could have texted."
