I am in a staring contest.

Nikki's dark eyes are staring into my soul, her face is flushed and her hands are fisted at her sides. Her mouth opens and closes but no words are coming out.

I can't form words either. I want to avert my gaze and run away. However, I force my body to face her. With each passing minute, my knees threaten to buckle under me. The sweat has become a waterfall and my hands are no longer fists. They are weak, tiny palms with the strength to only lift a grain of rice.

"Told ya." That sickly sweet voice whispers in my ear. "I won."

A hand grabs my shoulder. Thinking it is Victoria, I pull my arm away quickly and glare at the culprit. The mere action causes my heart to speed up in adrenaline.

Carter holds his hands up defensively. "It's me, man." He clears his throat and juts his chin towards the entrance of the school. "Maybe we should leave. I'll go with you." He looks serious.

"Typical." Victoria stands in front of me, the embodiment of evil, with her head tilted to the side. A wide smile is covering the lower half of her face. "Run away or stay. Buuttt - " she sings. "I have a feeling Nikki won't forgive you either way."

"That's it!" Carter reaches inside his pockets. "In the name of the moon, I will punish you!" He blows on his fist. "Shoo, spirit!" Carter throws a handful of rice toward her.

"Why did he blow on it?" Julian mutters.

The grains hit her head, shoulders, and chest. A blood-curdling scream echoes in the hallway. Her face grows a shade of red.

"I can't imagine that made her happy." Julian has a neutral expression but there is a hint of a smile on his mouth.

I can only nod.

Nikki still hasn't moved. Her expression is normal enough that I fail to detect any anger. Her hands are no longer fisted but are hanging limply at her sides.

"Hey..." Wyatt places his hand on her shoulder. He is quick to shoot an arrow at me with his eyes. "Nikki, w - want pizza or something?" His finger scratches at his ear.

"Pizza? Really?" Darren raises a brow.

"What do you suggest?" Wyatt asks through his teeth.

"Pizza, yeah?" Darren repeats.

Nikki nods, turning her heel.

"I'm sorry."

My half-assed apology halts her steps.

Victor and Julian shake their heads.

"You're sorry?" Nikki turns her head, eyes burning with strong emotion. "You're sorry that you told everyone? Or sorry you got caught?" She pulls her cheeks roughly, pulling her tears away. "I can't believe I told you that." A strangled sob escapes her lips. "So stupid. So very stupid." She chokes.
