"Turn right here, right?" Nikki glances at me from the corner of her eye.
I nod, swallowing roughly. Nikki turns the wheel of the car, driving towards my house. She seems consumed with the light music on the background.
Julian's a genius. His car is in the shop so he "stole" my car keys and left. But before leaving, he told Nikki to take me home. I didn't know until I was screaming out in horror for my missing car.
So here I am. Sweating profusely while trying to keep my eyes on the road. "So... did you wait long?" I wince at my poor conversation skills.
"Not much." Nikki shrugs. "I was doing my homework so the time went away pretty past."
"Oh." I swallow roughly, my thumbs playing with each other. "Mrs. Adler made me stay extra because I skipped two detentions."
"Sucks." Nikki pauses. "I think this is your house?" Nikki parks in front of my house, analyzing it.
"Yeah." I unbuckle my seat belt. "Thanks for the ride. And sorry... for making you wait." I avoid her eyes.
She nods, her eyes glancing at my house. "It's okay. See you later." She smiles oddly. A smile not as sincere as her other smiles.
Out the corner of my eye, Logan pokes his head from behind the front door.
"Don't look now but trouble is coming."
"Trouble?" Nikki turns her head.
I grab her cheeks to prevent her from turning it further. "I said don't turn it!" My eyes widen. Noticing our closeness, a burn appears on my ears.
"That makes me want to turn it!"
"Are you kissing?!"
My hands fall from Nikki's cheeks in surprise. Logan wiggles his eyebrows.
"Hey!" The surprise on Nikki's face turns to shock. "I didn't know you'd be here, Logan."
Logan ruffles his afro, using his "lady killer" smile. "I couldn't stay away from our beautiful town, so I came back." His eyes seem to sparkle in the sun.
"His ex drove him away from college."
"Really?" Nikki looks at me in surprise. "I thought no lady could scare you. I guess I was wrong." She grins.
Logan's charming face drops as a blush rises from his neck. "Whatever. I'm going to buy some fried chicken, want some?"
"Is that what we're eating?" I make a face. "What happened to the cook?"
"Mom's cooking tonight."
Goosebumps rise on my skin. "Why? Did she fire the cook or what?" My voice rises.
"I'm not sure. Dad's sending me to get provisions. Just act surprised when I come back with the chicken. I'll act like it was a last minute thing." Logan explains. "I better go before they close. See you later, Nikki?"
