"Are you ready, baby?"

"Mom!" I whine. "We're in public!" I give her my best-annoyed scowl but she pinches my cheeks. I try fixing my cap back to its side.

"I can't!" She kisses my cheek. "You look so adorable in your dress!" She leans in to kiss the other cheek.

"Woah!" I place my hand in front of her, stopping her. "It's a gown." I pat it down and take off the cap on my head. "And this is a cap." I place it on the back of my head and frown at her. "I'm graduating, mom. This isn't a - a wedding dress." I stutter when Carter sticks his tongue out in my direction from behind my mom.

He makes kissy faces. He pulls his cheeks out and pinches them in a teasing manner.

I look my mom in the eyes and smirk. "Carter looks cute," I grin. "He's behind you."

Carter's eyes widen. He attempts to turn the other way but my dad grabs him by the shoulders, preventing him from leaving.

"Oh! How handsome!" My mom runs to Carter and grabs his head in her hands. Carter's mouth opens like a fish. My mom gushes, "You're such a grown boy! Isn't he, Thomas?"

My dad smiles sweetly, "Yes, he is." He looks like he wants to laugh.

"I - I - Thank you, Mrs. Mabry." Carter gives up. His hands stay by his side while my mom abuses his face.

"I think he likes it."

My insides jump from fright. "When did you get here?" I ask my brother. "I thought you'd be late."

After dropping out of his first college, he started a new one in the second semester. He caught up by taking classes that summer. And now that the school year finished, he's about to start his third year of college.

Logan shrugs, placing his hands inside his dress pants. "I called off work today. I need a break."

I look at him in disbelief. "You're an intern. You answer calls and check clients in." How hard can that be?

Logan glares at me. "I can't wait until you become an intern. I will spit those venomous words back at you." He slaps my forehead. His other hand pulls my cap to the side, no doubt messing up my freshly cut hair.

I scowl, patting my hair gently. After making sure no hair feels out of place, I place my cap back on.

"I think Carter is liking the attention too much," Logan whispers.
