My morning went the same as it did yesterday. Actually. That's how it went every day for the rest of my stay. I had been helping build houses, but today Anita was taking me to do something else. Today I was going to be a guest in a school for African Children.
We arrived at the village and Anita showed me into the school house. It was small, but there were quite a few kids in there. The teacher, thankfully, spoke English, but the children did not. So everything I said, she would translate to the children. I just told them a little bit about my life. Then the teacher left it open to them to ask me questions.
At first, it was a bit slow. But when the children warmed up to me, they were asking a ton of questions. And I answered them all.
Soon, it was time for them to go outside and play. I'm guessing this was their Physical Education/ Recess time.
I stood in the doorway and watched them run around carefree. They looked like the happiest kids on the planet. They were playing games and dancing and talking. All of it brought a smile to my face. Then. One of the children grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the other kids.
They wanted me to play cricket with them. I knew what the game was, but had never played it before. So they showed me. Soon they had me playing a full game of cricket.
After finished the game, they all pulled me and gathered in a circle. Music started playing they started doing a tradition African dance. I had no idea how to do it, but the kids taught me pretty quickly. They dance was amazing yet so simple. It went on for about 15 minutes before we all had to go inside.
This is the time they had set up for math. I could tell this was the kids least favorite thing to do. And that they struggled with it. When I was watching the teacher teach, she was explaining it weird. She was getting slightly frustrated that the kids weren't understanding the concept.
"Maybe I can show you a couple of tricks that I was taught. It really helped me learn this...?" I asked gently not wanting to insult the woman.
"Of course! Be my guest! Anything to help the children!" She said genuinely while handing me the piece of chalk.
I began to explain some little things while having the teacher translate them. Pretty soon, they were finally starting to get the concept.
When it was time for me to go I said goodbye to all the kids and gave them hugs.
"Thank you so much for coming. And for teaching them how to do math. I know that you really encouraged them." She said giving me a hug.
"Thank you for having me. It was such a great experience. I hope to come back some day. In the meantime. Keep doing what you are doing." I said smiling.
Once I got back to the hotel Anita and I went out for a nice dinner because it actually wasn't all that late.
When we finished dinner we headed back to the hotel once again. I showered and did my normal evening routine. I Skyped Rob and this time we talked for hours and hours. It was great to catch up with him every night. I was really starting to miss him more and more.
When we finally hung up I saw that we had talked for 3 hours. I went to bed that night feeling lonely. I was missing the person that slept beside me.
