Things started to get pretty backed up and intense in Africa. I know I planned on staying for two months, but it's already been almost three. And I needed to get home to my friends and family.
Today was my last full day here in Africa. And probably going to be the hardest. Today I am going around to villages and giving vaccines to children and providing check ups for adult and younger children.
We got to this one village that was full of children. They were all waiting in line for a vaccine.
I was the one giving vaccines today. Many of the children were so small and skinny. It broke my heart. They all looked terrified of the shot. When it was their turn many would ask,
"Is it going to hurt?"
And my answer would be something along the lines of,
"Just a pinch. But it will be okay."
This actually seemed to encourage the little children and make them slightly less terrified. None of them cried or whined. They were all very tough. I had just finished with the last child when Anita called my name.
"Paisley! Come in here! We need your help!" Anita shouted from the other room.
I rushed to pick up all my stuff and ran to the next room. In there I found Anita with a women laying on a bed who was VERY pregnant.
"Have you ever delivered a baby before?" Anita asked.
"Um no." I said.
"Well, you're about to." Anita said pushing me towards the pregnant woman.
Before I could say anything, I was already down on the ground in front of the woman.
Anita was behind me holding her legs in the air.
"Are you ready? When I say push, you have to push as hard as you can!" Anita said to the woman only getting a nod in response.
"Alright. PUSH!" Anita shouted.
The woman pushed as hard as she could. Again. And again.
"I can see the head!" I said. "Keep pushing. You are doing great!"
The woman continued to push until the baby came out. I quickly wrapped it in a blanket as Anita cut the umbilical cord.
"It's a girl." I said handing her to her mother who was crying tears of joy.
After that Anita and I left the room to give them some privacy. We finished up with our medical stuff and shoved it all back onto the helicopter and hopping on.
We got back to the hotel and I had to make sure that I had everything I needed to go home. Stuff was all over my room since I had been here for three months. It took me a while to pack everything that I had brought.
After I finished packing, I Skyped Rob to talk to him. We talked about everything that went on today and that I had delivered a baby!
"Wow! I'm so proud of you!" He said happily.
"It was quite the experience." I said laughing. "I think I'm going to go to bed and try to get some sleep. I have to get up early in the morning to catch that flight back home."
"Thank god. I miss you so much. I need you here. With me." He said relieved that I was finally coming home.
"I love you. And I'll see you when I get back." I said blowing him a kiss.
"I'll be waiting." He said while grabbing the kiss and putting it to his heart.
I ended the call and plopped down on my bed. I tried to go to sleep, but it wasn't working out. I was too excited to go home and see Rob and the others.
